Cambourne 78 Shelford 0 Captain Scott just over a hundred years ago had a similar dilemma ,whether to go on against incredible odds and acheive immortality or to drop back and never be able to look in the mirror again. Shelford 5ths can look in the mirror this morning and be proud that we took on a 1st team of quality and quantity. After the enforced cold break we were a little rough around the edges so the warm up proved. The opening exchanges were all them attacking and Shelford tackling, and then the hail came. Within minutes Fraser 'Oates' had to leave the field 'for some time' with hyperthermia. then Jim R retired hurt , James W had a head bang so great that today he is now Jenny W and wants to be a singer in Vegas. Les was the final retirement and Matron had him tucked up in bed long before Take Me Out started (it's too much for him). The scoring was relentless with Cambourne utilising their superior numbers and 'training' to full effect. We bravely fought on like the Battle of Britain pilots but sadly the Germans won this time. Names to mention this week are Will McG ,Tom Q and Manu for brilliant tackling as always and the rest of the lads for keeping their heads up under incredible pressure and weather conditions. The nearby footballers had to go and hide under their slankets during the worst of it. In the end we walked off feeling a little beaten up but proud of being on the right team. The score was 78 nil if you're interested but mismatch doesn't start to describe it. Perhaps next year Cambourne could play our 4ths ? (didn't they get beaten by them last year?) and we can have a more competitive game next week. Highlight of the day for me was my daughter's text being read out by Alan Carr on Radio 2 on the way home describing the putting back in of my dislocated finger twice. Note from the last report , I didn't mention Eric's try - sorry. Hope you've all recovered and start feel your fingers again. As Scarlett O'Hara said in Gone with the Wind 'Tomorrow is another day.' Thanks to everyone who turned up and made a day of it. |
