Under 17's

Shelford 12 Woodford 38

Following last weeks 52-0 defeat at Colchester where the performance was lacklustre to put it mildly albeit with 14 players Shelford again were short of numbers for their game against Woodford ahd were fortunate that some "guests" were able to turn out from the Colts to make up the numbers.

The first half was a tale of some greater commitment from the Shelford palyers but some great opportunist and individual tries from a very good if undisciplined Woodford side who collected no fewer than 3 sin binnings during the game.At 24-0 to the visitors at half time it looked very ominous again re the possible margin of defeat for Shelford.

When Woodford scored a penalty try at the start of the second half which led to Matt Bauld being sinbinned for tackling the man without the ball it looked like the worst fears of the home support would be realised with the score of 31-0.But from that moment on Shelford gained from somewhere some self belief led by the guest players who allied to their ability are playing in a winning side therefore were playing with huge self confidence which transferred itself to the Under 17s who have been enduring to put it mildly a traumatic season.

10 minutes in to the second half Shelford scored when following 3 penalties near to the Woodford line the scrum half who we will call A Trialist drove over from close range to score an unconverted try to make the score 31-5 to Woodford.Shelford stayed in the ascendancy and scored again with 10 minutes to go with a good move down the back line which led to the guest winger who we will call A,N Other going over in the corner from where James Gibson kicked an excellent conversion to make the score 31-12 to Woodford.

With virtually the last play of the game the Woodford centre scored an excellent individual try leaving 3 Shelford defenders in his wake to go over in the corner,The conversion was added to make the final score Shelford 12 Woodford 38.

Confidence and numbers are in short supply in the current Shelford Under 17s but all the players deserve great credit for their efforts and commitmnet today. If said levels can be maintained for the rest of the season then perhaps a few victories can come our way which would boost confidence and make a pleasant change fro players and spectators alike.

Bury St Edmunds 10 – 38 Shelford

Try Scorers: Tom Whitehead 3, Stan Clark 1 and BSE loan player 2

Conversions: Henry Hackett 4

Shelford won their first game back after the Christmas and New Year break with a good win against a strong Bury St Edmunds side. BSE kicked off which lead to early Shelford pressure Stan Clark ran cleverly, passed off to Tom Whitehead who created the space for the on loan BSE player to score our first try which Henry Hackett successfully converted. BSE responded immediately with a try but failed to convert. From the restart Shelford took control as Bradley Goss drove forward, Stan Clark picked up, out to Tom Whitehead and back again to Stan who scored in the corner. Henry narrowly missed the conversion from a tough angle. Shelford dominated the rest of the first half with 2 more tries and conversions. The tries came from the on loan BSE player (I doubt the BSE team will thank him for his contribution this morning) and Tom Whitehead after a powerful run through the BSE defence. Henry Hackett successfully converted both attempts. Shelford were 26 to 5 ahead at half time.

BSE started the second half with an early try and failed to convert. Play stopped for a while after Conner McIntosh sustained a neck injury and the game moved to another pitch. The great news is that Conner is OK and will play again in 3 or 4 weeks.

BSE couldn’t maintain the pressure after the break in the game and Shelford pushed on with Tom Whitehead going through the BSE defence again to score our fifth try in the corner. Our last try also came from Tom Whitehead which Henry Hackett converted. Overall a good team performance.

Under 11's

Another great day of rugby! Shelford U11 fielded 2 teams at this four way fixture between Royston, Saffron Walden, Wendens Ambo and Shelford.

Shelford Lions 15 – Saffron Walden 10

Shelford Lions started play with a really positive attitude despite playing uphill!! In what was a vigorous match, Shelford defended well in the first half against an impressive Saffron Walden side.  There are lots of really positive things to say about the team play in this match. Some good passing and better team work. Rucking was good too. Our back line sometimes got out of position leaving potential gaps – something to work on. The scrum did well though the second row needs to remember to get low. Good play by Franklin, Ben Whitehead and Ollie Calvey really helped the momentum in this match. Some good individual play by Angus Fraser and Conrad Bell too but this really was a team game with everyone playing their part. Eventually one of our many breaks succeeded and great running from Bart Lowden resulted in the first try of the match. In the second half, Shelford found the going a bit easier easier as it was downhill and we saw another break away try after some brilliant flowing rugby (good passing boys) and this time the try came from Harry Fennell. Ben Whitehead had a storming match and was finally rewarded with the last try of the match.  Well done all.

Shelford Lions 7 – Wendens Ambo 12

This was a really tough match against another good side. Shelford Lions started playing downhill but failed to capitalise on this advantage despite coming very close with near tries from Jack Knight, Tyus Pfaender and Michael Griffiths! How it did not go over the line I will never know. Wendens then scored leaving Shelford a hard job in the second half. In the second half Shelford really upped their game, started putting in the tackles and the forwards started getting stuck in. With some injured players, substitutions from the Shelford Tigers team (Tyus Pfaender, Alex Bedford and Will Hogarth) kept the momentum going and they made great contributions to the game. Overall some really good offensive team play kept the ball in the Shelford half for most of the time and after his first attempt to run through them ended in injury, Michael went on to score a deserved try. Great conversion by Alex Bedford. Very close and the boys did well.

Shelford Tigers 14 – Royston 28

Playing downhill in the first half, Shelford enjoyed a period of sustained pressure from which Ed Cranse scored and Alex Bedford converted. Josh Borrett then increased the lead after Tyus Pfaender pounced on a loose ball, Alex Bedford adding the extra two points once again. Spectators within earshot enjoyed a fine comedy moment when Joe Borrett berated the team for standing around looking like it was half time - after the whistle had gone for half time!

Royston hit back immediately after the break, two powerful runs from strong Royston lads taking full advantage of the slope with both tries being converted to make the match all square. A breakaway then saw Shelford fall behind for the first time. Shelford then relinquished the ball from the restart and Royston's speedy winger ran three quarters of the pitch without a tackle in sight. A superb first half performance aided not only by the slope but also some fine rugby, unfortunately over-shadowed by the second half performance that lacked any solid tackling and movement.

Shelford Tigers 15 - Saffron Walden 0

A mazy run uphill from Will Hogarth saw Shelford take the lead against Saffron Walden, with whom we have enjoyed some titanic battles in the last couple of seasons. There were no conversion attempts in this fixture. Shelford increased their lead after running through several phases, Harry Fennell eventually wriggling through for a well worked try.

Shelford scored a deserved third try with the last play of the second half, Cameron O’Brien touching down after good passing between captain Alex Bedford and Harry Fennell. An excellent performance all round including some strong defending as well as good movement going forward.

Shelford 130 Wendons (& Royston) 15

Thank you to everyone who made the journey on Sunday and a big thanks to Wendons for not calling it off

On such a cold and very frosty morning it was great to see so many players making the trip. With the teams mixed into another two different combinations we came away with a very impressive aggregate win. Our tackling was good and our rucking proved to be the difference as we battled to victory in every match. Scrums and line outs went well and we were very encouraged by the boys enthusiasm when it came to trying out five man scrums. Our scores came from some outstanding individual skill, some pure strength and most pleasing of all (after much shouting and pleading from the touch line) some good passing and support play. Every member of the squad put in a huge amount of effort none of which went unnoticed. All the boys will have good days and not so good days but everyone if now contributing to all aspects of the game. As their basic skills improve along with their confidence the players performances will become more consistent.

The under 10’s have made an excellent start to 2012 and as we progress this year we feel very confident that the squad will go from strength to strength

Tacklers of the day – Archie Calne and Daniel Huntly

Shelford Dragons 10 Royston 20 Tries: Stevenson, Ben Colman

Aggregate scores:  Shelford 10 Wendens Ambo 15; Shelford 45 Royston 20

On a bright January morning Shelford U9s made the short trip to Saffron Walden to play in a mini-tournament with Wendens Ambo and Royston.

Shelford Vikings opened their pool with an emphatic 35-0 win over Royston.  Shelford played some flowing rugby and were strong in rucks and mauls, not letting Royston get their hands on the ball.  When Royston did launch an attack committed tackling soon turned the ball over and repeatedly resulted in Shelford breaking away to score.  Joshua Speechley scored 4 tries for Shelford with the one each for Harvey Skellern, Charlie Boyle and Seb Clatworthy.

In their second pool game Shelford Vikings met a much stronger Wendens Ambo team and by half-time were 0-10 behind.  Shelford played much better in the second half with, with the only try of the half coming from William Gelling.  Despite spending much of the game near Wendens Ambo’s try line, Shelford were unable to force their way over for a second time and finally lost 5-10.

In the second pool Shelford Dragons started with a hard fought 5-5 draw with Wendens Ambo with Shelford’s try coming from Freddie Stevenson.

In their second pool game Shelford Dragons struggled against a well organised Royston side.  Shelford were out-rucked and as a result were not able to get their hands on the ball long enough to threaten Royston’s line.  The final score was a 10-20 loss with the Shelford tries coming from Freddie Stevenson and Ben Colman.

Both the Dragons and the Vikings finished second in their pools and so did not progress to the final, which was played out by teams from Wendens Ambo and Royston.  For their outstanding try-saving tackles Charlie Hurd and Alex Budenberg were named players of the day for Shelford.

Overall score     Shelford 115 – 140 Wendens Ambo

                         Shelford 40-50 Royston

Shelford U8s faced some stiff opposition today in terms of the attacking lines of both Wendens Ambo and Royston. Although all three squads were fairly evenly matched, the Shelford defensive line left too many gaps for the attackers to make use of in several of the matches.

The Sharks first match was a fast paced affair. George Shannon touched down 4 times for Shelford and a try from Ben Smith ended in a 25-35 loss to the Sharks. In their second match the holes in the defensive line were made the most of by Wendens who scored 40 to the Sharks 20. Shelford tries were from Joshua Barrett, Joe Huntley and two from George Shannon. In their last match against Royston, the Sharks started off badly and were 0-3 down at half time but they fought back to end the game 20-25 to Royston with tries from Rian Wells, Joshua Barrett and two from George Shannon.

The Lions started strongly against Royston but two knock-ons resulted in the opposition getting the ball and Royston finished the game one try ahead at 20-25. Shelford tries were scored by Rory Morgan, Harvey Taylor and two from Thaddeus Glass. The Lions second game was a fast paced affair against the hosts. Two tries each form Ruaidhri Carey and Thaddeus Glass and a try a piece from Tom McFarlane, Rory Morgan and Harvey Taylor resulted in a 35-30 win to the Lions.  In their final game both Wendens and Shelford continued to push their opponents line and break through to score and this was shown in the high scoring draw of 35-35 with Lions tries from Brian O’Shea, Poppy Elliot, Harvey Taylor and two each from Thaddeus Glass and Rory Morgan.

Well done to all the players for the fewest steps into touch the coaches have seen in a long time.

Player of the day was Thaddeus Glass for some superb attacking runs that reached the try line.

Shelford Sharks 20 – 15 Royston A

Shelford Sharks 30 – 40 Wendens Ambo A

Shelford Sharks 35 – 30 Shelford Tigers

Shelford Sharks 40 – 25 Shelford Tigers

Shelford started the New Year in chilly conditions in Saffron Walden today as Wendens Ambo hosted Shelford and Royston. Shelford took a large squad to the fixture and used the opportunity to field all the players evenly giving them all at least a half against our opposition. It was great to give the whole squad some competitive match time.

In their first game the Tigers just lost out by a single try to Royston going down by 4 tries to 3. All three of the Tigers’ tries came in the second half as they found their feet with tries from Harvey Clark, Matthew Campbell and a fine try from Alex Illingworth.

In their second match the Tigers went down to a fast Wendens team 9 tries to 6 in a high scoring encounter. The Tiger’s scores came from 2 each from Harvey Clark and Joseph Taylor and then a try from Lewis Hines and a fine run and try from Matthew Campbell completed the scoring.

The Sharks faired a little better by winning one of their two matches. In their first match, the Sharks went down by 6 tries to 8 against Wendens Ambo.  Their tries came from Ciaran Thircuchelvam, two from Henry Sperring and a hat-trick from Marcus Moscuzza.

The Sharks got Shelford their first win of the morning by just edging out Royston 4 tries to 3. This time the hat-trick came from Monty Lovell with Moscuzza adding the other score.

With just two games each against our opposition Shelford went head to head with two eagerly fought games between the Sharks and Tigers.
