Shelford 19 - Worthing 15 Grant Anderson and Aki Lea returned strongly and inspired Shelford to their most impressive performance of the season by beating Worthing 19 – 15 at the Davey Field. Had their finishing matched their control of the game, the margin of victory would have been even greater. Shelford dominated early on. Anderson was at the heart of the majority of Shelford’s attacking play and he breached Worthing's defence and offloaded to Taniela Bakoso to cross for a converted score in the right corner after solid work from the homeside pack. Worthing started to work their way into the game and Alexander Nielsen claimed his first try after a deft grubber kick from fly half Joe Govett. As Worthing continued to respond, Anderson was on hand to make an interception that led to a Harry Owens penalty. Anderson’s attacking play deserved a score and he was only denied after superb scrambling defence from the visitors. The Shelford pack continued to apply concerted pressure on their opponents and Owens and McLean traded penalties allowing Shelford to take a 13-8 lead into the interval.
Shelford’s pack looked formidable with ball in hand and they created valuable field position for Owens to add a further two penalties in the third quarter. However, with both sides tiring, Nielsen capitalised on a Shelford lapse and ran 70 meters for his second score with the penultimate play of the game. But it proved to be too little too late as Shelford ran out worthy winners. |
