Under 15's

Shelford 24 Cambridge 25
Shelford u-15s failed to make it twelve wins out of twelve this season with a loss by the narrowest of possible margins. Cambridge arrived set on avenging their 34-12 defeat by the home side earlier this season and probably deserved their victory, playing tenaciously and keeping a better structure.

Shelford started the game with a sustained period of pressure on the Cambridge defence. This led to the first score when a clearing kick was caught by Chris Pepper, who broke through the Cambridge line to touch down, Conor Sullivan converting.

The visitors hit back with two unconverted tries, the Shelford defence having gone AWOL on the wing, but Shelford responded in kind with Connor Hein-Jones catching the ball from a kick just after the restart and running through for the second try for the home side. Chris Oram followed up, extending Shelford's lead by scoring in the corner to make the half-time score 17-10.
Cambridge came back fighting and narrowed the gap with an unconverted try, but  a touch-down by Max Burgess-Clerke and a conversion by Peter Gordon put the score at 24-15. Determined play from Cambridge gained them two further unconverted tries and, despite strong late pressure from Shelford, the one point margin gave the visitors the victory.
There were periods of good play for Shelford but the lesson is that victories are won by hard work and discipline

County Cup -  Shelford 39  -  Newmarket 7

Tries- Tom Whitehead (2) Henry Hackett (2) , Stan Clark (2) , Miles Brown, Conversions- Ryan Deamer (2)

Shelford were looking to continue their latest run of good form with the intention another win today against local rivals Newmarket. Our lads started the first half with the slight advantage of wind direction in their favour , however the first few minutes saw fairly even possession whilst the two teams settled into the match.
Shelford didn't wait too long before putting the first points of the match on the scoreboard, Shelfords' forward pack working hard at the breakdown to release quick ball for the backs, Miles Brown, Ryan Deamer and  try scorer Henry Hackett putting the move together with slick play. Deamer added a further two points with the conversion.
From the restart Newmarket pushed up into Shelfords' 22, Alex Lockie hitting the approaching Newmarket forwards hard to set up the counter attack.
10 minutes in Stan Clark ran in Shelfords' second with some fancy footwork taking him past the Newmarket defence at the halfway line to break clear for the try.
The restart saw Ryan Deamer collect the ball in the bread basket and take it into the contact area to set up the attacking platform. Kieran Hatter ran from deep to link well with Stan Clark with some set moves, changing the angle of attack to keep Newmarket guessing.
Shelford continued to frustrate Newmarket, moving the ball around well through several phases of play, Tom Whitehead breaking clear on 20 minutes to score. The final try of the half came from a Henry Hackett kick and chase, Newmarket unable to defend without conceding a penalty 5 metres out. Shelford were in the mood to capitalise and did so with a Stan Clark try between the uprights.
Half time score 27-0
Newmarket started the 2nd half using the wind direction advantage well and were soon camped in Shelfords 22. With Shelfords' forward pack continuing to grind down Newmarket they managed to produce turnover ball and Tom Whitehead broke free from the maul to run in a try from Shelfords' own half.
Newmarket hit back with a consolation try and conversion midway through the 2nd half as Shelfords' concentration lapsed momentarily. Shelford had the last word with Miles Brown capitalising on weary Newmarket legs with an explosive breakaway try from Shelfords own half.
Final score 39 - 7
Shelford 29  Colchester 10

In the second fixture of the morning Shelford were looking to make it a double win. Possession was even for the first few minutes, both sides probing for weaknesses in the opposing defensive lines.
Tom Whitehead was the first to realise that a kicking strategy may work and quickly tested the theory, following up his kick at pace with Tom Cropper by his side. Colchester buckled under the pressure of the fast approaching duo, allowing Cropper to run in Shelfords' first try of the match, converted by Keiran Hatter to go 7 -0 up early on.
From the restart Whitehead and Cropper were involved again, combining well from Shelfords' own half for Cropper to score the second try of the match.
Charlie Martin decided he wanted some of the action, and hit the Colchester defensive line hard to set up a ruck. Scrum half Guy Lewis ensured he was at the back of the ruck to collect the ball from his forward pack, seeing an opportunity to cut his way through the Colchester defensive line to score. Colchester hit back immediately with a try to reduce the deficit.
Half time score 17 - 5
Shelfords' forwards continued to work hard at the breakdown, allowing the backs to cross the gainline to move upfield. At times Colchester countered, but John Harnwell and Lewis Hunt both denied them any real progress towards the Shelford try line with some crunching tackles. As Shelford pressurised Colchester into spilling the ball, Theo took advantage of the loose ball to carry strongly upfield to set up another counter attack. Ben Frisk worked tirelessly to keep the momentum going Shelfords way, however Shelford did concede another try to a spirited Colchester side.
Charlie Martin continued to apply pressure to a worn down Colchester pack by bursting through from the line out, to set up another Shelford try by Tom Cropper, converted well by Ben Frisk.
Full time score 29 - 10

Well done to all who played today in both games. A great team performance.

Newmarket 15 Shelford 15

The boys were always going to have to work hard today against the full Newmarket squad, that was nearly twice the size of ours. However they worked hard for each other and put in a excellent performance.  We asked them to start strongly, and they responded magnificently. Jamie Coates straight onto the front foot with a quick penalty, then a dart from the base of the scrum and an inside pass to Jamie Johnson to cross the line and put Shelford 5 points up within a minute or two (no conversions today). Image Newmarket quickly hit back to level the scores, then Henry Breeze touched down after a line-out only to be called back for a knock-on. This was the first of many steals at the front of the line-out from Henry. There were several good attacks from the boys. One strong run from Carrick Maley, passing on to Joe Thompson, who then and off-loaded to Jamie Johnson, unfortunately came to nothing.

Carrick Maley
As always Josh Butler put his body on the line time and again.  Oscar jones, forming a new second row partnership with Leonardo Castiglione was next to score for Shelford. Yet another run from Jamie Johnson (a feature of the day) allowed Oscar to pick up from the back of the ruck and score. Newmarket again levelled the scores. There was some tidy work at the back from Jamie Pilkington and Josh Whitmore as the sides traded kicks. As always the wall of Julian Renwick and Tom French forced Newmarket wide where Ben Aho and Will Stepney were able to force the opposition out. Another line-out win from Henry Breeze gave Shelford their final score as he forced his way down the touch line and over the whitewash. I missed the final Newmarket score, but I am assured the scores finished level in a game that was played in the best of sporting spirit. Well done all! Those that wished to continue, played a short match with mixed teams dubbed Newmarket vs Shewmarket.

Shelford  1 win and 2 draws:- Aggregate score – Shelford 25 Newmarket 20

On Sunday we took a  step forward as a squad. Our line defence was back to its best and we are beginning to win more than we lose at the ruck.

Newmarket again proved to be a very strong side. They tackled as well be we did but with a smaller squad and one outstanding individual they were able to maintain continuity in their team selection. With two teams of around 14 players each and everyone getting game time is was always going to be a big ask to come out on top. To the players credit they achieved this by one score. Defensive organisation and the quality of our tackling meant that Newmarket had to work as hard  for their points.

2 -2 in the first  and 2-2  in the last game meant that our 2nd match was the difference. This proved to be a close encounter and with everyone playing really well it took a fabulous run from Archie to score the only try. Well done Archie!

Also well done to everyone who played especially those who took what we had practised in training onto the pitch

Tacklers of the Day – Ben C (most tackles in one match) and Ethan (after performing really well in the tackle drills Ethan took this onto the pitch and moved up another notch in his development)

Player of the day – James (for his best performance this session) and Pip (man of the match)

Congratulation boys! (please don’t forget to bring the  trophies back next Sunday)

REPORT

Newmarket are one of the strongest teams in the area so a fixture against the Suffolk side was always going to be a good test of how well Shelford are developing in the contact game.  Shelford won only one of the six encounters, which would suggest that Shelford were found wanting but the scores do not reflect some of the good rugby played by Shelford.  Shelford frequently had more of the possession and were effective at rucks and mauls but Newmarket were better at using their possession and taking advantage of their speedsters to score tries at important times.

Shelford Vikings lost their first two games 10-20 and 5-20.  The Shelford scorers were William Gelling, Joshua Speechley and Freddie Stevenson.  Shelford Dragons had two closer encounters.  A slow start to the first match meant that they were 5-15 behind at half-time but came back strongly in the second half to score 2 further tries and some improved tackling kept Newmarket from the Shelford line.  The Shelford scorers were Charlie Hurd, Ollie French and Seb Clatworthy.  The Shelford Dragon’s second game was another close encounter but this time Newmarket were just able to keep their noses in front, winning 25-20.  The Shelford try scorers were Ethan Karpuk (2), Harry Grenville and William Barnett.

The day concluded with ‘A’ and ‘B’ fixtures.  The Shelford ‘B’ team put in the strongest performance of the day scoring 9 tries to Newmarket’s single touch down.  Joshua Speechley capped a fine performance with 4 tries with the remaining tries coming from Ben Barker, Harry Punshon (2), Edgar Watson and Arthur Waddington.  The Shelford ‘A’ team had a tough time and were let down by some weak tackling but they didn’t let their heads drop in a 5 – 15 defeat, with the consolation Shelford try coming from Joe Davies.

There were a number of notable performances on the day.  Seb Clatworthy again demonstrated his ability to pinch the ball in the tackle or at the maul, Tom Hogarth repeatedly made a nuisance of himself at the ruck and made some important tackles and Edgar Watson made some storming runs.  But today’s players of the day were Conor Caughtry, for some committed and try-saving tackling and Hugh Tomkys, who led the way at ruck and maul.

Report:

Both Shelford squads played in some fast paced and high scoring matches today.

The Sharks lost their first match by just one try but still managed to rack up a score of 30 with 3 tries from George Shannon and one each from Harvey Taylor, Tom McFarlane and Joshua Barrett. Their second game was so fast paced that the ref and coaches were having trouble keeping up with the game play. 2 tries each from Tom McFarlane and Toby Owers plus a further try from George Shannon resulted in a 25-35 defeat after some persistent attacks from the Newmarket squad. In their final game both the Sharks and the opposition kept up their pace and tries from Brian O’Shea, Josh Barrett, George Shannon, Vinnie Allan, Toby Owers and 3 from Tom McFarlane resulted in a 40-35 win to Shelford. Image

A pleasing point to note was that every player in the Sharks scored at least one try today. This reflects the teamwork that the squad has established and is showing its results on the pitch.

The Lions and their Newmarket opposition both showed some great tagging today with both sides winning 7-tag turnovers at some point in each game. The Lions first game was a close fought affair but tries from Joe Huntly, Poppy Elliot and Theo Hay weren’t quite enough against the 4 tries from the opposition. In their second game, the tries just kept coming from both squads with 2 tries from Jo Huntly and Theo Hay and one each from Freddie Sales and Alex Guyler to end in a 30-30 draw. In their final game the Lions put on some excellent attacking runs right through the Newmarket line. 2 tries each from Freddie Sales and Theo Hay and one from Alex Guyler resulted in a 25-15 win to the Lions.

The overall score was a 165-175 which reflects just how close both Shelford and Newmarket squads were. It’s good to see that every member of the Shelford U8 squad has now scored at least one try this season – well done everyone!

On a blustery morning at Newmarket, Shelford U7s continued their fine progress and turned in a good overall aggregate win. Some fine attacking running was equally matched with some eager defence and without the ball, Shelford were quick to put their opponents under pressure.

Shelford Tigers got the squad off to the best possible start with a resounding win six tries to Newmarket’s single consolation try. Shelfords try scorers were a brace a piece from Billy White and Bryce Holland while Alex Crawford and Alex Illingworth also got their names on the score sheet.

The second match was a much tighter affair and the game ended in a draw with three tries apiece. Shelfords scorers in the match were Keane Runham-Wyman with one and another two from White.

In their final game Shelford were just edged out of a tight contest going down two tries to Newmarkets three. White continued his run of scoring in every match going over for one of Shelford’s tries while Illingworth ran in the other try.

Shelford Sharks faced tough Newmarket opposition in their first game and went down three tries to seven but rallied back strongly to secure two victories in their following two matches.

The try scorers in their first match were two from Alex Cross and a single try from Jake Borrett. In their second match the Sharks came back to just win a close match by four tries to three. The four tries shared between Hilary Hawthorne, Ben Ward Hunt, Harvey Clark and another from Borrett.

In their third and final game the Sharks turned on the style in a convincing win by six tries to three. Their scorers were two each from Tom Birkby and Matthew Monie another from Cross and Borrett continued his form of a try in every game by adding another touch-down.

Shelford’s player of the day was Jake Borrett.
