Match Report : Powergen London 1 Barnes 1st XV v Shelford 1st XV Result : 58 points to 10 points

Shelford came onto the receiving end of performance from their hosts that they themselves have regularly handed out to the opposition during past seasons.

Any mistake that Shelford made was dealt with in a manner reminiscent of the Southern Hemisphere style of play recently seen during the World Cup Pool encounters. Opportunities were often made by Shelford from the stable base of their srummage, which, with a settled side who know their drills and each others play patterns could have been turned into points. The initial weeks of this season have however been marred for Shelford by injuries and the unavailability of players in training sessions. Subsequently, poor decision making and play execution was inevitable. What could not be foreseen was the manner in which Barnes were able to punish such occurrences. Certainly the home supporters  were stunned when they arrived at half time from watching a certain World Cup Quarter-Final to see their team leading by 20 points to 5 points. What they missed was the sight, on four separate instances, of Shelford winning their own first phase possession only for the initiative to be handed back to Barnes by unforced errors. The Barnes three-quarters, who were operating as a collective and speedy unit, were then able to capitalise on their good fortune and field position and effectively secure the match by registering a try in every instance. On the law of averages and with  their srummage continuing to secure ball with ease, it was inevitable that at least on one occasion, Shelford would put together an error free passage of play and Kramer Ronaki was on hand to register a try. The second half was virtually a repeat of the first, with Shelford generating a series of individual powerful plays but then committing the errors and being punished by the Barnes back line on another four try scoring instances. The Shelford response was once again made with a try scored by Kramer Ronaki. With the final scoreline being registered at 58 points to 10 points and further injuries forcing Christopher Glynn, Aki Lea and Teddy Saunders from the field, Shelford will need to re-group before their Powergen Cup match away to Huddersfield on the 13th October 2007.
