The game was played in perfect conditions and with a huge team sheet we were confident of giving our late replacements a run for their money. We were bolstered by a couple of usual lads from up the club and with a guest appearance from the nice Mr Petit (Ed) who stole the show and deserves to move nearer to us so he could play every week.
The first 15 minutes were frantic and full of eastern (counties) promise. We charged around the pitch as if we were fit and knew what we doing. The open play was tremendous and we nearly scored of a couple of occasions. Jim 'Stirling Moss' Robson was his usual terrier self and combined with Fozzy and Ed P. to break through their lines. We had a couple of strong centres Tom and Ed 'Jazz Hands' who had good ball and we were rewarded with a try by James 'Sausage' in the corner ,he took the long way round a large opposition centre (via Sawston nearly).
They scored to keep the score one all at half time. The second half was a slightly different game with Newmarket turning up the heat and scoring quite freely with good players clearly destined for higher places. We had a lot of tackling practise but we had periods when we ran the ball well , particularly Mano, Jules and Kai who we borrowed for the second half (sadly Dunny can only manage 40 minutes these days - Mrs Dunny ??)
The best move for Shelford in this period was a lovely 15 man move across the pitch with Fraser 'Crushed nuts' scoring in the corner (carrying one of the opposition with him)
The audacity of a drop kick score from Newmarket only cemented our feeling that we were slightly outclassed but happy with the game.Thank you to all 23 players who made themselves available, including Lee Coney who made a guest appearance for Eric 'Hamstring gone again'
We will find a team in our league soon and then we can have a real run out. Keep fit lads and see you all next week.
By the way , sorry about the spelling mistakes every week but this machine is so old the keys are in Latin - booom booom ! Next week - Norman Collier jokes - look it up .
