Colts Shelford 67 Sudbury 14 On a Sunday morning, more like spring than late autumn, we welcomed a 17- man squad from Sudbury with our 34-man version. It was good to welcome back two long-term injured team members with Dan Burling and Cormac Starling available again. We hope to have the pair of Sams back and giving the coaches a full squad for selection next week! We kicked off after the minute’s silence for Remembrance Sunday. For the first 7 minutes it looked as though we couldn’t remember how to play ending this phase with Sudbury scoring a converted try. This proved to be a wakeup call and our boys started to compete in every aspect of the game we achieved a series of overlaps allowing Callum M to score a unconverted try. Shelford 5 Sudbury 7. At 12 minutes Lewis G raced into the corner and Lewis C converted. Shelford 12 Sudbury 7. We must say that we where unusual today in not taking and controlling the re starts: this must improve for next week. At 17 minutes, after Sudbury wining a penalty and applying some pressure, Shelford made a break (after a long kick from Lewis C and good forward play including layoffs from both Connor and George) for Callum M to score again which Lewis C converted. Shelford 19 Sudbury 7 The pressure continued from Shelford but with options not being taken and we did not always look at taking the direct route which would have allowed for even more success. At 26 minutes, Lewis G crossed the whitewash for a un converted try - Shelford 24 Sudbury 7. After the half hour, with Steve Dennington making rolling subs, we continued having the majority of ball. At 32 minutes, Louis R who was having a great game followed a long series of phases, scored a un converted try-Shelford 29 Sudbury 7. Callum M then scored a brace , even converting the last one himself before being substituted. Half time: Shelford 41 Sudbury 7 The second half started with many new faces and we continued applying pressure . After 5 minutes Toby scored in the corner which was un converted - Shelford 46 Sudbury 7. Louis R made a great break, scoring near the posts which Jack T converted - Shelford 53 Sudbury 7. We attacked again and several pick and runs allowed Callum S to race in a great try converted by Jack T - Shelford 60 Sudbury 7. As we approached the final stages our game opponents scored a converted try as our concentration drifted - Shelford 60 Sudbury 14. The final score came from a converted try from Rhian who broke away in our half to score under the posts. We had a final score of Shelford 67 Sudbury 14 The score flatters us. At times we could and should have been more positive. Sudbury must be complemented, the boys kept a good spirit and they did not drop their heads. Apart for some handling errors, they could of have threatened us more. Our thanks also go to a very good referee and two good assistant refs. Under 17's - EC Cup - Shelford 5 Wymondham 20 Following last weeks encouraging display against Cambridge Shelford Under 17s entertained Wymondham Under 17s in their second Eastern Counties Cup match. The early exchanges were dominated by Wymondham who spent the first 5 minutes camped in the Shelford 10 yard area but despite Wymondham missing a kickable penalty Shelford managed to repel this pressure and scored on their first foray in to the visitors half. This was helped by the Wymondham flanker being sin binned for a dangerous tackle on James Tooke who took virtually no further part in the game..A good kick through by James Gibson set up a good attacking position and winger for the day Calum Ross drove through a couple of tackles and was driven over the line by the Shelford forwards but the Wymondham defence managed to get enough bodies in the way for it to be a scrum 5 to Shelford.A quick heel and some slick handling by the backs allowed full back Ally Dunham to come in to the line and score in the corner. The conversion was missed to make the score 5-0 to Shelford. And that was as good as it got for Shelford.Wymondham responded almost straight away with a penalty to make the score 5-3 and 3 minutes later scored a good try after Shelford lost their ball in a ruck on their own 10 yard line and the ball was spun down the line for a converted try to make the score 10-5 to Wymondham. The rest of the half saw almost total domination by the visitors with Shelford contriving to lose a lot of their own ball especially in the rucks an mauls.Somehow Shelford held on till half time with some stout defence and aided by the fact that Wymondham missed another very kickable penalty. If we thought the half time team talk would put fire in the Shelford bellies we were sadly mistaken,Wymondham remained the much hungrier and agressive side and scored 5 minutes in to the half. There was an element of good fortune about this as the kick through over the top of the Shelford defence took a horrible bounce backwards over the back pedalling Shelford defence and bounced nicely in to the hands of the Wymondham winger who was already travelling at pace and he raced away to score in the corner leaving the score after an uncoverted try 15-5 to Wymondham. A try saving tackle by full back Ally Dunham prevented the visitors adding to their tally almost immediately after but it was only delaying another try by 5 minutes when a move down the left side led to another try through some poor Shelford defence.Again the try was unconverted to make the score 20-5 to Wymondham. Shelford rallied in the last 10 minutes and spent a fair bit of time in the Wymondham 10 yard area but failed to score a consolation try which given the performance would have flattered them a little. Wymondham ran out deserved winners therefore due to their greater intensity, too many Shelford forwards were not fast enough to the breakdown which led to players being isolated and possession being turned over.It was unusual to see the collective Shelford pack playing like this as usually their dominance in the set pieces and in the loose is a feature of their play. On a positive note the backs played well and their handling and defence was generally of a good standard. But basically Wymondham wanted to win more and the final score of Shelford 5 Wymondham 20 bore that out. Under 16's Luton 12 Shelford 73 Under 15's Welwyn 12 Shelford 27 Shelford u15s made if "10 out of 10" with their tenth successive victory of the season. This was a comfortable win against Welwyn, who had some good players but not enough of them. They had twelve available for the kick-off and borrowed three of the Shelford squad to make up a team. A Welwyn injury shortly after meant that Shelford had to supply a fourth player. Shelford got off to a strong start and would have scored from the kick-off but for a very good Welwyn tackle close to the try line. Ben Thomas opened the scoring for Shelford, after David Pugh at No.8 picked up the ball from the base of the scrum and passed to Ben, who scored under the posts, Conor Sullivan converting. Ben then added a second try, diving onto a ball that went loose from a lineout and was knocked back across the Welwyn try line. Not to be left out of the action, James Thomas took a pass from a strong run by Peter Gordon and charged across the line for a third try for the Thomas brothers. Who says sibling rivalry is a bad thing! Conor converted to make the half time score 19-0 in Shelford's favour. ![]() Ben Thomas, in Shelford colours, being tackled by Dom Talbot, also a Shelford player but lending Welwyn a hand in view of their short numbers. The players loaned to Welwyn for the first half returned to Shelford colours, and other Shelford players joined the Welwyn ranks for the second half. They showed considerable commitment to the Welwyn cause, resulting in some lively challenges between Shelford players on each side. Shelford added to the points in the second half, with James Thomas keeping the scoring a family affair with a breakaway try. The conversion was missed, but Peter Gordon added three points shortly after with a skilful drop goal. Welwyn, strengthened by the Shelford players, began to work their way back into the game, with some strong runs and effective back play. Welwyn gained their first points when David Pugh (wearing his Shelford shirt inside-out in a rugby version of a "turncoat") barged his way through the Shelford defence to touch down close to the posts, with Welwyn securing the conversion. Welwyn continued to press, adding a second try, scored by a very fast winger, and were unlucky not to convert, the ball hitting the cross-bar. The game finished shortly afterwards with a final score of 27-12 in Shelford's favour. Under 14's
Shelford 5 - 0 Biggleswade The scorer was Jacob Towsend. Shelford started well with plenty of pressure . The Shelford try came from a good line out 5 m from the opposition line, with a good high catch from Jacob, who then drove through a large gap in their line to score. George Franklin & Ollie Barnes from Shelford put in some excellent big tackles against Biggleswade. Under 13's Shelford 67 - Biggelswade On a bright sunny Sunday moring Shelford under 13s travelled away to Biggleswade. Shelford took just 6 minutes to open their account with a strong run from Tom Whitehead who, with several hand offs, scored his first try in the corner. Then with some nice forward play Tom Whitehead scored his second under the posts with Kieran Hatter playing Fly half for only the second time kicked the convertion. With some great defence from Shelford forwards Shelford scrum half Connor McIntosh scored with a great sniping run. Then almost straight away Connor McIntosh scored again with another sniping run from the back of a ruck. Kieran Hatter kicked his seconed conversion. Then the ball went lose deep in Shelfords half and Tom Whitehead scored his hatrick try with a 70m run to score under the posts. Then Kieran Hatter kicked his third conversion.Almost after the kick of Tom Whitehead scored again. The second half saw Shelford turn up the pressue with some great passing and tackling. The wingers then got in on the act with Eric Bell getting a try after a great run up the wing and the conversion was kicked again by Kieran Hatter. Then with sustained pressure from Shelford forwards Harry Pearson scored his first try in Shelford colours with a dive over the line. A fantastic run from another one of Shelfords new comers, Andrew Martin, followed by a great ruck from the forwards, resulted in Louis Hunt scoring. With quick ball again down the back line Louis Hunt score his second of the day with Kieran Hatter kicking the conversion. The last try of the day was scored by Tom Whitehead to make his total 5 for the day with Kieran Hatter kicking his 6th conversion of the day to make the final score Shelford 67 Biggleswade 0
Under 12's Shelford 35 - Sudbury 26 (combined score) The boys came up against a huge pack today, but Nick Budenberg, Henry Breeze, and Daniel Hoole all stood firm taking big hits. Josh Butler also putting his body on the line – eventually carried off. Shelford’s first score coming from a turnover from Nick, with the ball passing through the hands of Will Stepney before Daniel forced his way over the line. The conversion added by Sam Hurd. Shelford found themselves on the back foot after a couple a scores from the powerful opposition pack, but good defence and cover from Jamie Pilkington kept Sudbury at bay. Then an excellent lineout steal from Oscar Jones allowed Tom French to even things up with the conversion again by Sam. ![]() Tom French In the second match Shelford started strongly with good running from Julian Renwick and Josh Whitmore. Harry Alderson completed his first entire match for the club. The first score started by a quick penalty from Angus Thomson shipping the ball on to Joe Thompson to stretch for the line, the extras added by Angus. Aidan Thomas now playing at scrum half made the break and pass to Jamie Johnson for the second try, again the conversion by Angus. A wonderful solo effort from Ben Aho completed the scoring. Catching a clearing kick and returned it all the way to the try line, Hurd adding the two. ![]() Ben Aho's 1st try for Shelford Under 11's
Aggregate Score Shelford 45 Sudbury 35 After a great performance against Welwyn last week, it was good to see Shelford U11 continue with their strong form against an impressive Sudbury side. Game 1: Shelford 15 Sudbury 10 Sudbury are a big, strong side with really impressive tackling skills and by half time Shelford was 10 points down. However, they came back strongly in the second half, tackling, rucking, and this lead to tries from Tyus, Nathan and Will. Most impressive was the positive attitude of the team coming back into the match after being 10 points down at half term. Try-stopping tackles from both Franklin and Michael showed fantastic commitment and the net result was that Shelford secured a close victory. Game 2: Shelford 5 Sudbury 10 Sudbury continued with their very strong forward play and outstanding tackling and Shelford struggled in a few places with missed tackles. Generally however, Shelford put in another really strong performance, with Alex both scoring a try and then stopping the opposition from scoring with a wonderful tackle. So this was a close loss against a strong team. Game 3: Shelford 25 Sudbury 15 Shelford really wanted to win this final match. In the first half, Shelford players put in excellent tackles, including one from Josh on someone who was twice his size. This kept Sudbury at bay and then Tyus made a break for it and scored the first try. This was closely followed by a try from Ed in a nifty bit of running. Michael then passed out wide to Patrick who took the ball at speed through 2 players to put Shelford up 15 – 0 at half time – way to go Patrick. The Sudbury team was not so easily beaten and came out fighting and we conceded two tries in the opening five minutes of the second half against powerful running and good forward play. Duncan saved at least 2 further possible tries from Sudbury with outstanding tackles and this really kept Shelford in the game. Then Shelford came back, with stronger forward play, great running from Bart and Will and everyone tackling the big guys and remembering to ruck!! Two great tries from Will followed and Harry K kicked the ball away in the final minutes to ensure a well deserved victory for Shelford. Once again the team should be really proud of their performance, with good commitment from everyone on the pitch. Under 9's - aggregate score: Shelford 60 Sudbury 50
Shelford Vikings 10 – 15 Sudbury Shelford tries: Joe Davies, Joshua Speechley Shelford Dragons 20 – 10 Sudbury Shelford tries: Freddie Stevenson (2), Charlie Hurd, Seb Clatworthy Shelford ‘B’ 15 – 20 Sudbury ‘B’ Shelford tries: Alex Williams, Harvey Skellern, Arthur Waddington Shelford ‘A’ 15 – 5 Sudbury ‘A’ Shelford tries: William Barnett, Seb Clatworthy and Joshua Speechley This week Shelford U9s welcomed Sudbury to the Davey Field, which was always going to be a tougher encounter than last week’s one-sided game. In the first game Shelford Vikings conceded two early tries but Joe Davies grabbed one back for Shelford before the half-time break. Both sides scored a further try in the second half to give Sudbury a 15-10 victory, with Shelford’s second try coming from Joshua Speechley. The second game was a tough encounter with Shelford Dragons taking a well-deserved 15-0 half-time lead, with the Shelford tries coming from Freddie Stevenson, Charlie Hurd and Seb Clatworthy. In the second half Sudbury put in a much stronger performance in scoring two tries to Shelford’s one try, a second from Freddie Stevenson, but Shelford kept their noses in front finally winning 20-10. The third game of the day was a close encounter between the ‘B’ teams. The half-time score was 10-10, with the Shelford tries coming from Alex Williams and Harvey Skellern. In the second half the sides could only be separated by a single try with Sudbury finally winning 20-15, with Shelford’s third try coming from Arthur Waddington. In the final match of the day between the ‘A’ teams Shelford had a dominant first half with tries from William Barnett, Seb Clatworthy and Joshua Speechley giving Shelford a 15-0 half-time lead. In the second half Sudbury again came out stronger and repeatedly tested the Shelford defence. Sudbury scored the only try of the second half making the final score 15-5. Sudbury were a strong and well organised side so Shelford did well to win two of the four matches, including the final ‘A’ team encounter. William Barnett, for some strong straight running, and Tyler Driscoll, for some aggressive tackling, were awarded the player of the day awards. Under 8's aggregate score: Shelford 85 Sudbury 50 Shelford Sharks 25 Sudbury Blues 15 Shelford Sharks 5 Sudbury Reds 5 Shelford Sharks 30 Sudbury Blues 20 Shelford Sharks 25 Sudbury Reds 10 The boys and girls should be very proud of their efforts on the pitch today. Defensive tagging was probably the best we’ve seen this season with several turnover balls each match and the Sharks paying much more attention to the offside line. Positioning and passing was also much improved with runners almost always in good positions to receive passes from a tagged player. Brian O’Shea started off the Shelford games with 4 tries in the first match plus one from Toby Owers to end the first game 25-15 to Shelford. The second game was very even with both sides tagging well and preventing the opposition from scoring. Thaddeus Glass scored the Sharks only try to end the game 5 all. After a brief rest the Sharks came back invigorated and a hat-trick from Toby Owers and tries from George Shannon, Thaddeus Glass and Joe Huntly resulted in a 30-20 win to Shelford.
In the final game both squads were starting to tire and a few more mistakes crept in but the Sharks kept up the momentum. Some inspired passing and determined support of the ball carrier resulted in a 25-10 win to the Sharks with tries from Toby Owers, Harvey Taylor, Joshua Barrett, George Shannon and Ruaidhri Carey. It was more difficult to choose player of the day today as all of the squad showed improvements in their game but the most noticeable was Freddie Sales who was constantly positioning himself ready to tag opposition players and winning the tags.
