ImageBarnes 58 – 10 Shelford 1st XV 15

The weather was fine, conditions underfoot were perfect for a free-flowing game of rugby and yet on Saturday, the Shelford collective were not at the races.

This was our worst showing of the season so far and very few positives could be extracted from our performance.

We came up against a very well-drilled Barnes side, who potentially have the most explosive back line in London One. When presented with opportunities, they often capitalised to score well-executed tries. On more than one occasion they passed the ball through several pairs of hands and ran the length of the pitch to touch down between the posts.

Shelford’s attacking opportunities were few and the ones that presented were seldom taken. Our two tries came from driven line outs, something that has worked well consistently for us this season. Kramer and Teddy crossed the line for Shelford. Outside of this attacking option however, we showed little imagination, failed to control the game and did not pose an attacking threat either out wide through the backs or through the middle with the forwards.

It’s back to the drawing board this week in training and we must revert back to the basics of our game. Clearing rucks, concentrating on angles of running, attacking options, defensive patterns and putting the ball confidently through our hands would constitute a good beginning. We need to significantly improve our level of performance and commitment if we are going to be considered tough opposition and a force in London One.
