Shelford 5ths 10 : 14  Letchworth 4ths (written by Richard Craddock)

This time in English, for all those who didn't pay attention at school.

(To the tune of Rod Stewart's Maggie May)

Wake up Shelford
I think I've got something to say to you
It's early November and
I really should be called a fool
I know I keep you amused
But I feel I'm being used
Oh Shelford we couldn't have 'tried' anymore
You led me away from my home
And it meant I broke a bone
We play on and on and that's what really hurts

This week's 5th team was made up of the usual merry band of misfits. We had a smattering of guest stars and i'd like to thamk the legendary Childers, James W (both of them !) Kai, tall Will, Le Tristan , Gary et al. The remaining 5ths stepped up to the challenge and created a bona fide 'all stars' team. Jim R had an 'interesting' time against a gorilla as an opponent but kept smiling. The forwards gelled (welcome bavk Dave T) despite only meeting for the first time on the pitch and in open play we were the match of Letchworth.

They were well drilled in the scrums and we spent most of the first half tackling but this we did well and with growing confidence we held them to a single try. The second half was a different story and we started attacking and eventually scored a well worked back move with tall Will going over in the corner. More pressure from the excess of penalties given to them meant they scored with a forward charge over a well defended Shelford line. We reacted well and marched down the pitch and after St Michael of Cambridge nearly went over, the author crashed (with a delightful side step) over for a well earned try. We nearly had the winning try but were just a few yards (similar to metres!) short but again interesting decisions meant the game ended unsatisfactorily but with a warm glow in our hearts.

Yet again the mighty 5ths put out a team out and gave another fine performance , I enjoyed it as did the rest of the team.
