Colts Shelford 38 Diss 12 Shelford took to the road with a squad showing numerous changes from the previous week's cup encounter away at Colchester. Another glorious Autumn day awaited in Norfolk, and although a midday kick-off should have not meant a slow, sleepy start that's exactly what we got from Shelford. Numerous tackles that were too high on their larger opponents allowed them to get the drives going through their effective mauling and pick & goes, and Shelford soon found themselves 5-0 in arrears. A couple of early knocks meant a hasty reshuffle in the forwards, but this seemed to galvanise their approach to their play and quickly started to make in roads into Diss territory, resulting in a break through to the line by Sachin Booysen to tie the scores at 5 a piece. Shelford's backs started to look more dangerous in possession and a couple of great runs by centre Ben Doughty had the Diss defence on the back foot. From an attacking scrum on the Diss 22 line, a lovely training ground move created a 2v1 for Jack Topham to dot down in the corner following an assist by Lewis Green. Lewis Cracknell slotted the touchline conversion with aplomb, 12-5. Soon after, Shelford returned turnover ball with interest and were harshly called back for a forward pass when in the clear. An attacking lineout saw a fine catch and drive finished off by Guns Foster, and Cracknell duly slotted another fine conversion for half-time to be called at 19-5. The second half saw more a fluent display, as the game opened up a little. Booysen again charged through for another score to the scoreline to 24-5. Diss responded with a resolute attack through their forwards, but again the Shelford defence was too high and allowed Diss too much territory which ultimately resulted in a score under the posts, which was converted for a 24-12 scoreline. After this score it was generally one-way traffic, with Shelford being much sharper at the breakdown, and support runners available to the ball carrier. Captain for the day Bob Thomas-Mathieson had a fantastic game, with Sam Till not far behind him alongside Connor Denton showing sharpness and aggression in abundance. Bob deservedly got on the scoresheet with one of his text book support runs to take the off load and run clear of the covering defence, converted by Cracknell, 31-12. A final flourish saw both the forwards and the backs combine well, to see an overlap created for Cracknell to take advantage of a mismatch in the Diss defence, which he duly converted for a 38-12 victory. Bob Thomas-Mathieson ( Captain), Milka, Lachlan Finlayson, Jonny Humby, Big Al, Dan Smith, Guns Foster, Will McGarry, Jack McDaid, Oli Watts, Connor Denton, Sam Till, Sachin Booysen, Nathan Taylor, Alex Long, Lewis Cracknell, Jack Topham, Alex Flynn, Ben Doughty, Calum Shaw, Toby Poirier, Rian Merry, Lewis Green. Under 15's Shelford 58 Diss 0 Shelford u15s had a decisive victory against a Diss team, who were up for the game and played tenaciously. The Shelford team played well, led by captain Callum Lees. They defended strongly and showed very good supporting play. All the players worked hard and proved too much for Diss, who struggled to defend against the power and speed of the home team. The first half ended with Shelford ahead by 36-0. Shelford continued to dominate in the second half, although benefiting from the occasional lucky bounce of the ball. Diss responded with determination, although their frustration began to show as the game went on. The game ended with a final score of 58-0 and Dom Talbot securing his hat-trick. The other try scorers were Connor Hein-Jones (2), Kieran Moore, Callum Lees, Tage Wells and David Pugh, with a penalty try in addition. Conversions were kicked by Ben Thomas (2), Max Burgess-Clerke and Callum Lees. Under 14's Diss 21 - 12 Shelford A good performance was given by Shelford u14 ,although they lost the match the score did not match the 70 to 80% possession & territory that Shelford had. They just could not convert the possession to points. Diss scored with three break away tries, with strong players scoring from their own half. The Shelford scorers were George Frankiln and Ollie Barnes who each scored a try. One conversion was scored by Ben Johnson. Under 13's Shelford 57 Diss 5 Shelford started strongly with good rucking by the forward pack at the breakdowns to dominate the possession. An early break from a fired up Lui Neal saw Shelford push well into Diss territory, but Diss defend well and push Shelford back. Strong scrummaging by Shelford, especially from Kieran Jones and Thomas Gelling, saw Shelford win both their own and Diss put ins, putting Shelford on the front foot and allowing Fin Karsten to dictate the gameplay at Flyhalf. |
