Colts Shelford Colts 17 Welwyn A Colts 36 With no under 19's turning out for Shelford, this was effectively Shelford under 18's v Welwyn Colts, and their older and more streetwise opponents got them into the arm wrestle contest that suited their style of play. Welwyn's forward orientated game was very formidable, and time and again got their big ball carriers going forward to great effect, helped by some woeful Shelford tackling in the first period as we failed to stop them by tackling too high and allowing the drives to continue towards our line. The first Welwyn try came from exactly this type of play, and Shelford soon found themselves 7-0 down. Shelford's backs stuttered on the occasions we had ball in hand, and were hesitant going forward which meant a lack of depth and a lot of overrun balls on the flanks. Welwyn prospered from this 'stop-start' affair and were again able to rumble over for a couple of tries, the second one of these was a classic case of leaving the tackle to somebody else and Welwyn crossed unopposed for a 21-0 lead and were in danger of running away with it.This stung Shelford into action, and our only real up-tempo part of the half when we went through a number of phases lead to an overlap against a stretched defence and a final draw and pass by Lewis Green put Toby Poirier in to the corner and open our account prior to half-time at 21-5. Shelford made wholesale changes at the break and ran out with a completely fresh back line, and they were soon in on the action when a lovely set play was finished off well by the outstanding Harri Beasley on the wing to bring the score to 21-10. Shelford continued to threaten but a lack of cohesion in the backs saw us cough up a number of clear cut opportunities, and this resulted in the game being slowed down again with numerous scrums which again suited Welwyn well. A Welwyn penalty and well executed catch & drive at the lineout saw them put more daylight on the scoreboard at 29-10, but at this stage the game had become a more open affair and suited Shelford's more 'up-tempo' style of play. Sam Porter was having a stormer at the breakdown, winning numerous turnovers but Shelford failed to convert these opportunities from promising positions, and kicked away a lot of possession while in the opposition's half rather than back themselves and get support to the breakdown, which in most cases was there on the shoulder. A fine break by outstanding debutant Ben Doughty saw him cut a fine line at pace, and although he was brought down by the Welwyn full back, Sam Perry was in support to take the off-load and run in for the best try of the game, converted by another debutant Jack Topham, 29-17. Welwyn finished where they were for most of the game, on the front foot with their pack and another catch-drive lineout ball resulted in the final score to run out deserved winners 36-17. The game was marred by an ankle injury to scrum half Alex Long late on, so we wish Alex a speedy recovery. This was overall a lacklustre performance by the boys, sprinkled with some fine individual passages of play as well some fine individual performances. However, the key is to now get the whole squad performing as a unit in the coming weeks if we are to do anything of note in the National Colts Cup, starting next weekend away at Sudbury. Squad: Sam Porter (Captain), Sam Perry (Vice Captain), Lachlan Finlayson, Cormac Starling, Nathan Taylor, Alasdair Kerslake, Dan Smith, Ben Foster, Jack McDaid, Connor Denton, Louis Rawlings, James Clare, George Teeboon, Alex Long, Lewis Cracknell, Jack Topham, Calum Shaw, Ben Doughty, James Murdoch, Alex Flynn, Josh Till, Harri Beasley, Lewis Green, Rian Merry, Dan Burling, Toby Poirier. Under 16's Shelford 45 Ely 5 Shelford try scorers: Ed Low (2), Rory Hutchinson (2), Matt McCann (2), Rew George Conversions: Rory Hutchinson (4), Harry Hitchcock (1) For some of the watching spectators this was the third match of the day - however the 4.30 am kick off for Wales v Samoa had not dampened the enthusiasm for wonderful game of rugby. Watching that nerve shredding arm wrestle was more exhausting than playing in it so we were hoping that the boys would put in a performance that would settle any lingering tension. Shelford had Ely under pressure immediately as the visitors failed to deal with the kick off. The ball was reclaimed and spun wide - full back Hutchinson entered the line to claim the try. Early season nerves were quickly calmed. There was then time for a brief cameo from Ed Low. The powerful centre scored two tries with his strong direct running before retiring with a neck injury. A further try by pacy winger Matt McCann put Shelford in complete control. With two Hutchinson conversions the score stood at 24-0 after 15 minutes. Ely then got their game going. Based upon a powerful pack they rumbled forward and threatened the Shelford line. Sadly for the Tigers a loose pass in the back line was intercepted by full back Hutchinson who ran the length of the pitch to score. He converted his own try to give Shelford a 31-0 lead. Undaunted Ely continued their forward oriented game and scored from a tap penalty just before half time. At the interval they trailed 31-5. The second half was a much more even affair. Shelford rang the changes. Prop Tom Curtis and flanker Edric Raminez-Valdez made impressive debuts and winger Patrick Hopper returned from a 5 year absence playing football looking like he had never been away. Ely pressed but Shelford contained the threat through well organised defence and sound tackling.. When the opportunity arose the pace and handling of the Shelford backs came to the fore. Winger Rew George showed impressive pace to score the sixth try. Hutchinson added the conversion. Finally powerful winger Matt McCann brushed off three tackles to drive over for his second try. Scrum half Harry Hitchcock drop kicked the conversion off the right hand upright and Shelford ran out 45-5 winners. Despite the scoreline Ely had proved worthy opponents and had never given up, giving a much improved performance. Ultimately however the pace and handling of the Shelford backs had decided the game.
