Under 17's Huntingdon 26 Shelford 8 A tough opening to the season awaited Shelford Under 17's as they travelled to face Huntingdon who beat them twice last season. With the wind at their backs Shelford started brightly and took an early 3-0 lead courteousy of a James Gibson penalty kick but the response from Huntingdon was immediate and Shelford spent most of the half on the back foot and found themselves 12-3 down after tries in the 20th and 28th minute one of which was converted. However just before half time Shelford were right back in the frame after a move from just outside the 22 involving Calum Miller,Jacob Milner and finally Jack Owen crashing over to make the score 12-8 to Huntingdon at half time. The early stages of the second half saw the game bogged down in the middle of the park but 10 minutes in Huntingdon scored again with a deft kick through and their winger just outpacing the Shelford defence to touch down in the corner. The try was converted to make the score 19-8 to Huntingdon.Shelford's cause was not helped by an injury just after to Calum Miller which led to his departure from the game and despite one or two individual breaks which relieved the pressure Huntingdon were in the ascendancy due to their better use of the wind advantage with some astute kicking deep in to Shelford territory by the Huntingdon fly half. Unfortunately it was a mistake on half way which led to Huntingdon's last try following a mistimed attempted miss move by Shelford which led to the dropped ball being hacked through by the Huntingdon player who then received a kind bounce in to his arms and he strolled over the lin with the converted try leading to a 26-8 scoreline in favour of the home side. A late rally saw Shelford camped near the Huntingdon line, indeed Calum Ross emerged from under a pile of bodies over the line but a try was not awarded as to be fair it was impossible to see whether the ball had been grounded. All in all a disappointing start, the scoreline was probably a bit harsh on Shelford but in terms of territory and desire Huntingdon had a bit more and deserved their victory. Finally best wishes to Calum Miller who is now off to Northampton and hopefully his injury will not keep him out for to long. Under 15's Woodford 0 Shelford 69 Shelford u-15s made a strong start to their season with a decisive win against Woodford, scoring 11 tries, seven of which were converted. The scoreline hides the fact that Woodford are a decent side, who looked threatening in the opening period of the game. Nonetheless, the Shelford boys had the advantage, which they pushed methodically throughout the game. The small squad combined well, showing great teamwork. The tackling and passing were very good, with strength at the breakdown and scrums. Particularly gratifying was that it was evident that the team had been paying attention at training and was actually willing and able to apply lessons learned to the game. Points for the future include the need to maintain discipline and focus, especially in the latter stages of the game. It would be wrong to single out individuals from what was a fine team performance. However, we should note the debut appearance of Tage Wells, in which he scored two tries, the five tries scored by Connor Hein-Jones, who was unstoppable on the wing, and some fine kicking by Conor Sullivan, who took the conversions. The try scorers were: Connor Hein-Jones (5), Tage Wells (2), James Thomas, David Pugh, Chris Oram and Michael Impey. Thank you to Woodford RFC for their welcome and hospitality.
