ImageShelford 19 – 16 Sutton & Epsom

We won our second game of the season on Saturday, in a match that went right down to the wire. In a tight game where the first points weren’t scored until more than 20 minutes into the game, we used the breeze and slope to good effect, gaining territory and playing the majority of the game in our opponent’s half. Pressure ultimately led to points and the boot of Chris Glynn made sure that the scoreboard kept ticking over in our favour.
In the last play of the first half, Aki Lea broke from the base of a scrum in Sutton’s 22 and threw an audacious miss pass to Warwick Andersen, who steamrolled his opposite number to score in the corner.

The second half was a much closer and scrappier affair, with both teams slowing down the play and preventing their opposition from establishing any fluidity in their play. Yours truly was sent to the sin-bin in the last of a string of penalties against the Shelford collective. I can only think that this was a case of mistaken identity!!! Ed Mills was later sin-binned for an infringement that he also may not have committed and consequently the second half never really got going. One moment of brilliance came from Shelford flyer, Dom Jones, who received the ball from Warwick “run it!” Andersen just outside the Shelford 22 and sprinted the rest of the length of the pitch to score the individual try of the season so far.

Although the visitors persistently repelled the Shelford attacks and had a lot of possession themselves, they never really threatened our line until virtually the last play of the game, when their centre powered over from close range for a converted try.

Positives emerging from this game were the outstanding tactical kicking of Chris Glynn, Dom Jones’ length of the field try and Aki “he’s coming again!” Lea’s powerful bursts. There are plenty of development areas to work on. However, after 2 effective training sessions next week, we will be confident of getting a result next Saturday as we entertain top of the table Richmond at the Davey Field.
