Shelford Development Squad 24 Saffron Walden1st XV 19

Shelford Development gained revenge for their County Cup defeat of last season with a pre-season victory over Saffron Walden played in 4X 20 minute periods. Both sides were rusty in the opening exchanges from the summer layoff but Shelford rounded off a fluid counter attack for John Naylor to score under the posts, however "Torres" fired the conversion of his try wide.

Shelford were now developing their patterns in the forward exchanges attacking through the 10/12 channel to move the bigger and more experienced Walden forwards around. However, Saffron Walden scored next to take the lead through a converted break away try. With Walden's forwards tiring and Shelford's youthful backline starting to gel, the middle period of the game was dominated by the home team, with the impressive Alex Poirier scoring next for Naylor to convert impressivley from the touch line. Duncan Doughnuts increased the Shelford lead, capping off a fine display on the flank and with 6 minutes left, Ned Brown powered his way through the tired Walden defence to score. Naylor converted to finish off the Shelford scoring. 24-7 would have been a fair reflection of Shelford's dominance in the crucial areas on the game, but they shipped two late scores through a combination of sloppy defence and late personnel changes.
