Shelford 20 - Worthing 51 Worthing put in an impressive display against a valiant Shelford side, as they subjected their hosts to a punishing defeat for the second time this year. All too frequently of late Shelford have been slow starters and Saturday was no different. Worthing began the match with more enthusiasm and energy and were the had crossed the whitewash twice before Shelford had moved out of first gear. Joe Launchbury exploited Shelford's defensive frailties to score both of Worthing's early tries. Matt Maclean converted the first of these, which put Worthing into a 12 - 0 lead with only 5 minutes played.
Shelford's response was positive and swift and Ed Gough reduced the arrears with a penalty after Worthing infringed. After fielding a clearance kick, Aki Lea made a trademark burst down the left flank, requiring several Worthing tacklers to take him to ground. The ball was recycled quickly and slick handling in the back division saw Phil Bullen-Brown cut a fine angle to glide through a gap to score Shelford's first try. Ed Gough added the extras. With the tide in their favour, Shelford's second score came courtesy of a sequence of powerful forward drives, with Dane Grey finishing off the movement for a converted score on the right. Gough added another penalty before Worthing's Greg Sullivan scored Worthing's third try just before half time. Mclean added the extras to make the score 20 - 19 at the interval. Whereas the first half had been a relatively equal contest, the second half was anything but, as Worthing added to their three try accumulation in the first half by scoring a further five tries. Shelford failed to add to their first half total. Worthing roared into the second half with powerful drives through the forwards resulting in a clear overlap for their back division, which Matt McLean exploited for their bonus point try. Paul Dunckley was the grateful recipient of a try scoring pass from Ben Dudley after smart work from the visiting fly half. By creating further overlaps seemingly at will, Worthing's forwards created several opportunities for their backline to attack. Joe Govett showed a clean pair of heals to grab a brace of tries and Will Smith completed the rout. Matt McLean added two conversions to give the visitors a handsome victory at the Davey Field.
