Under 10’s Shelford 65 Diss 5 A beautiful sunny day for rugby although the ground was hard and unforgiving with both sides suffering injuries as a result. The team was made up of a combined mixed squad over four quarters of ten minutes. Diss have traditionally been a strong team and just the sheer imposing size of their forwards and players today meant that stout hearts were needed all round. I looked around more than once as their subs walked passed and the sun seemed to dim a little. Quarter one 20 -0 After the initial clashes our first try was scored within a minute by Harry Simpson. The ball was popped out of the maul to Julian Renwick who’s pass found Findlay Thompson , then on to Angus Thomson and finally to Harry Simpson who with a clever jinking run cut through the opposition to score. As the bruising encounter continued we saw some rugged forward play from Josh Butler, Harvey Redfern and Henry Breeze, and some crunching tackles from the backs with Will Stepney and Josh Alexander putting in some great stops. This led to the ball being popped out of the maul by Henry Breeze to Harry Simpson who with a quick pass freed Angus Thomson who’s direct and powerful run saw him over the line. As the great driving from the forwards continued , and the backs solid defence was added to by quick passing, Angus Thomson dashed over for the line again, like a young Hussar, to bag his brace. The final try of the quarter came from great scrum work and good driving, with the ball being popped out along the backs to Jamie Coates who made a great run down the line to score a well deserved try. Quarter two 20 -0 Shelford domination was by now established as we took on wholesale changes to our line-up. Out of the blocks, great direct passing straight along the line ended with a killer pass from Jamie Coates to Joe Thompson who made a strong run straight for the line to score. Despite some crunching rugby from Diss, Findlay Thompson found Joe Thompson who fed Josh Butler, who with great determination, drove over the line to score a much deserved try. Our third try was Joe Thompson's second and saw him bundling over after Tom French used ball from the maul to free Findley Thompson who provided the final pass. The fourth try saw the brace for Jamie Coates and followed good scrum work from Daniel Hoole, allowing Jamie Coates, to once again run in a another try. Quarter three 5 – 5 After two straight drubbing’s, Diss decided to bring on the big guns and I think this was the closest to their first team that we saw today. Our Mixed team still coped well with them putting their players down in both the forwards and the backs, despite their efforts to dominate us. Eventually after great driving from the scrum, Jamie Coates fed Harry Simpson who drove straight over the line to grab even a Pyrrhic victory from the hands of the Diss team. Quarter Four 20 -0 Diss once again left their big guns on for this last quarter but the boys were well into their pomp. After some grinding forward play by Henry Breeze, Joe Thompson and Josh Butler the ball became lose behind the Diss dead ball line with Harry Simpson on hand to quick wittedly ground the ball. Our second try was another great feed from the maul by Tom French to Joe Thompson who’s run in was supported all the way by Findley Thompson on his shoulder. The third try was a great delight to the massed crowds with all the training and tears coming together to show a great example of team play and rugby. From bone crunching forward tackles near our line Henry Breeze stole the ball and made ground before passing to Findlay Thompson who made more ground before finding Harry Simpson. The move could have faltered but Harry found a path onward and found Joe Thompson in support whose final pass released Josh Whitmore to run straight down the line avoiding all attempts at interception. This move even drawing the comment from the on-looking Diss coaches “outstanding rugby” ……and who are we to disagree. Our fourth try saw the forwards once again rewarded with Henry Breeze bundling over from a penalty restart for a well deserved try after a couple of earlier near misses. Diss played with great courage and spirit throughout…. against an unrelenting Shelford squad.Squad was the operative word today with everyone playing their parts to the full. The way that partnerships were instantly struck up all over the pitch despite the wholesale changes should make the boys very proud of themselves. Today we saw great running and handling from Will Stepney, Julian Renwick, Josh Whitmore, Max Murphy, Angus Thomson and Jamie Coates, courageous tackling again from Harry Simpson, Tom French and Findley Thompson, continued improvement from josh Alexander and great commitment from all the forwards including Hoole, Redfern, Butler, Breeze and Thompson. The ground may have been as hard as nails but today the boys were just as tough and they should ALL be rightly proud of the result, team spirit and their commitment. Under 9's Game 1 Shelford 25 Diss 20 Try scorers: Pim Remijn 3 tries; Bart Lowden 4 tries; Tyus Pfaender 2 tries; Hayden McKenzie 4 tries |
