Colts Eastern Counties Cup Semi Final Wymondham 3 Shelford 12 Shelford progressed to the Eastern Counties Cup Semi-Final for the fourth successive year, to play Colchester away on Sunday 25th April (kick off: 2.00 pm). This was a victory for Shelford’s youth system, with a polyglot team comprising equal numbers of players from the U17’s, Colts and the Development Squad. Whilst the victory was not pretty, with many mistakes being born of unfamiliarity, it was a victory of desire and heart. Shelford started slowly and Wymondham registered the first points with a penalty goal. This was to prove their first and last score, as Shelford started to exert pressure in the forwards. With Shelford camped in the Wymondham 22, and the home defence stretched, fly half Will Barnes dived over and then converted his own try. (Half time 3-7)The second half mirrored the first, with Shelford completely nullifying the Wymondham attack with their aggressive fringe defence and with the midfield defence of Ned Brown and Lewis Collins (both U17) preventing Wymondham any width, the host’s only option was to kick for territory. The game was sealed, after many good scoring chances were spurned, with the impressive Sam Till (U17) scoring out wide. Shelford endured a few nervy moments deep in injury time, but their defence as all game, was resolute. Under 16’s – Northampton Saints Tournament A depleted and injury ravaged Shelford squad put up a stern defence of their title with some wholehearted performances before bowing out at the group stages. Shelford’s performances throughout the tournament were committed and every game they played was a tight affair, and with a little bit more luck on their side and with the odd refereeing decision going against them at crucial stages of certain games they could have gone a little further in the tournament than they did. Shelford 10 Stewart & Lloyds 0 Shelford started the tournament with a bang as they opened up S & L within a couple of minutes of the start as James Clare finished off a fluid passage of play for a 5-0 lead. Shelford continued to play with verve and controlled the play well as further good handling saw Nick Webb finish off for a 10-0 half-time lead. S & L upped their game with a series of pick & drives, but good defending by back rowers Nathan Taylor, Louis Rawlings & Bob Thomas-Mathieson drove them back on numerous occasions. Shelford struggled to impose themselves during the second period, but comfortably won the game in the end. Shelford 0 Bicester 7 With only the group winners going through, this crucial loss effectively ended our chance of being in the final. Shelford’s first half advantage in both possession and territory was not turned into points through a lack of support for the ball carrier when in threatening positions close to the Bicester line. Although Bicester defended well in this period we had enough possession to score the all important first try. This was not be as the second period saw Bicester’s mighty pack take control up front as Shelford battled at the breakdown with them toe-to-toe. A crucial penalty decision close to the Shelford line went against us when a highly debatable ‘hands in the ruck’ offence was given against us when a Bicester player had clearly not released the ball on the ground. A tap & go was converted into the winning try and although Shelford counter-attacked if their lives depended on it, they couldn’t make the telling score that would keep them in the competition. Shelford 5 Ely 5 Although mathematically almost out of the competition at this stage, Shelford were never remotely likely to play their local rivals without 100% commitment even if we were severely under strength. Shelford had the upper hand with the wind advantage in the first period, but again didn’t take their chances when they came along and as we turned at half-time Ely saw their chance to use their kicking game to good effect. Ely chased a kick ahead close to our line and put our defence under pressure resulting in a turnover and the first score of the game. Shelford responded magnificently, as they controlled the ball through a number of phases before Lewis Cracknell dummied and made a dash for the line. He was unfortunate to lose control of the ball in going for the line and this resulted in a 5 metre defending scrum. Time was almost up, but Shelford went through the phases again knowing that one tiny mistake would have seen the game over. Shelford created enough space for Dan Burling to dive over and equalise in a breathless finish to grab the draw at 5-5 and was the minimum their endeavours deserved. Shelford 7 Ampthill 12 With qualification now impossible Shelford rotated their squad to give everyone some game time in the final pool game. A good counter attack by Ampthill after we initially turned the ball over after a great hit by Josh Till saw their speedy backs clinically score under the posts for a 7-0 lead. A defensive error by Shelford allowed Ampthill some daylight at 12-0, but again a fantastic second half response saw Alex Flynn and Nick Webb running some great lines as well as some superb support play by the forwards. Alex Flynn finished off under the posts after some great inter-play, converted by Cracknell to put us back in the hunt at 7-12. Shelford continued to press until the game ended with the boys completely exhausted having given their all. Under 15's Shelford 24 Northampton Old Scouts 0 Shelford put together a very solid performance in their first encounter against Northampton Old Scouts. With only 16 fit players available for the match it was pleasing to come through a fixture with no injuries. The Shelford forwards took the game to their hosts with a series of pick and drives and made some good ground. The backline were solid and forced a number of turnovers in the tackle area to prevent a well drilled set of Old Scouts backs from getting into any sort of rhythm. The forwards scored the opening try after 10 minutes as the pinned their hosts in the right hand corner. First Captain Hector crossed the line but the ball was adjudged to be held up but from the resulting scrum a couple of pick and drives by the forwards was rounded off by Jack Owen as he barged over in the corner. With all the rugby being played in the Old Scouts half it was only a matter of time before Shelford scored again. The try came from a scrum 15 metres from the line on the right hand side. The ball went quickly left to Ally Kingdon running back to the blind side and with some fancy footwork he touched down. James Gibson slotted the conversion from wide out. Old scouts came back into the game and looked dangerous when they got some pace on the ball. Dan Pedlar was quick to react to a sliding kick through behind the Shelford defence as he touched the ball down just ahead of the chasing winger to prevent a score and keep it 12-0 at the break. The start of second half was more evenly contested but the play was confined to the middle of the pitch so neither line was threatened early on. A combination of good tackling and pressure forced Old Scouts to drop the ball in their back line. Some intelligent kicking from both teams made good use of the cross field wind to gain territory. Old Scouts also prodded a few kicks behind the Shelford defence and some good fielding by Ally Dunham kept the hosts from scoring. Shelford then upped the pace and following some good phases of rucking by the forwards the ball was switched to Dan Pedlar and there was no stopping him from 10 metres out as he dived across the whitewash under the posts to make any easy conversion for Gibson. More fancy footwork from Kingdon resulted in his second try of the afternoon and secure a 24-0 win. Credit to all the players for a consistently high level of commitment throughout the match and to our hosts for making it an enjoyable match played in a great spirit.Under 14’s Northampton Old Scouts 26 Shelford 19 Shelford slipped to their first defeat of the season against a big aggressive Old Scouts team in Northampton on Sunday. Injuries and illness again meant that Shelford were down to 16 fit players which meant that the team had a patched up look about it. Having said that, this was a disappointing performance, littered with missed tackles, dropped passes and individual errors. Shelford also got killed at the breakdown where OS showed more aggression and pushed the limits of the referee's tolerance, turning the ruck into a free for all. The result was OS hands continually slowing Shelford ball which limited the normal fast flowing game. The first OS try resulted from poor Shelford tackling after a characteristically slow start. The winger burst through the middle virtually untouched. The second try came as the Shelford back three failed to deal with a long kick and were turned over. Shelford came back into it as winger George Smith showed his strength to burst through three tackles to score in the corner. James Knoop converted magnificently from the touchline to put Shelford back in the game. OS hit back immediately with another try of their own as Shelford again showed their defensive frailty. There were some harsh words at half time but the boys realised that at 21-7 down the next score was critical. They showed great character and grabbed the next try through an interception by inside centre Sam Jones. Knoop converted and Shelford were back in it. OS then broke out again to restore their advantage. However all the rugby was now being played by Shelford and another over lap was created for winger George Smith to power over. 26 - 19 with five minutes to go - could Shelford draw level? Shelford spread the ball with pace and skill and created another overlap. Agonisingly the ball went to ground with the line beckoning and Shelford were denied. In truth OS were worthy winners. Shelford need to learn the lessons - more aggression at the breakdown and make those first up tackles. Under 13's Shelford 33 Sudbury 0 Our U13’s beat Sudbury 33-0, the score lines does not reflect the game, it was a hard fought affair against a bigger side. The Shelford boys were immense in defence not giving ground, and fighting for every ball – sometimes literally!! The crucial difference was our penetration when on attack, getting the ball wide to those guys that are fleet of foot and occasionally quick of mind! Under 12’s Game 1 Wendens/Saffron Walden B 0 -30 Shelford Game 2 Royston 10 -20 Shelford Game 3 Wendens/Saffron Walden A 5- 0 Shelford Scorers: Ben Shannon, Charlie Moss, Eddie Manning, George Franklin (4), Ben Harper, Eddie Doust & Ollie Barnes
Under 11’s – Wendens Ambo Festival Shelford won the Wendens Festival by beating all comers. It was agreed that we would play in a league rather than a knock out format which meant everyone got a chance to play plenty of rugby. As the morning progressed the team performances improved, especially the forward play who came together as a unit while the backs had cycle’s of passing play which opened up the opposition defence on many occasions. Shelford 20 – 0 Wendens Ambo Try Scorer: Tom Whitehead 4 It was essential to get off to a good start and after a long period of pressure Shelford took the advantage after Tom drove over the line to score his first of the morning. Tom’s second came after he received a pass from Finn, he pushed through to score in the centre. The next came at the end of a cycle of passing play with Tom scoring in the corner. Almost identical try following a scrum with passes from Kieran, Tom Cropper for Tom to score. Shelford 15 – 5 Bury St Edmunds Try Scorer: Tom Whitehead 2 & Tom Cropper 1 Tom Cropper scored his first of the morning again after a period of passing play to go over in the corner. BSE pulled one back and went in a try a piece at half time. Soon after the restart Tom Whitehead got his first of the game with an interception and 25 metre run to score. Tom’s second came after another period of passing play involving most of the backs to go over in the corner. Shelford 15 – 0 Royston Try Scorer: Ben Frisk, Tom Whitehead and Tom Parkes Our third win came against a strong Royston who had piled on the earlier pressure. Shelford absorbed this pressure and broke through when Ben Frisk took a pass from Tom Whitehead and ran hard to score. Half time. Shelford pushed on in the second half when Tom Whitehead drove to go score and Tom Parkes broke through the Royston defence to go over in the corner. Three out of three. Shelford 15 – 0 Saffron Walden Try Scorers: Ryan Deamer, Finn Karsten & Toby Herbert As the team performances improved more players started to score and our first came from Ryan after a series of passes which opened the SW defence. Our second came from Finn who caught the ball from a penalty followed by a dummy to score a try. The next came from Toby with his first try for the club, following a period of pressure we were 5 metres out and Toby got the ball to drive over to score. Shelford 40 – 5 Ely Try Scorers: Tom Whitehead 2, Tom Cropper 2, Kieran Hatter, Stan Clark, Ryan Deamer & Conner Wells As the morning progressed the team performances improved significantly and shown in the last game as more players got their names on the score sheet. Tom Whitehead and Cropper both scored a couple a piece. Kieran’s try came from a Finn Karsten pass and dummy to allow Kieran to break the Ely defence. Stan’s try came from a Shelford drive and a powerful dive over the line. Ryan’s came after a similar period of play and Conner made it over towards the end of the game. This confirmed Shelford as the Wenden’s U11’s Festival winners. Shelford Man of the Match for the forwards was Toby Herbert and a back was Kieran Hatter which was both thoroughly deserved. Under 10's It is not often Carver Barracks is an oasis of sunshine, let alone a place of tournament victory for our boys - well done to both teams for their considerable efforts a great result for all of us, especially the boys who have a great victory to share with their friends at schools. Match 1:Saffron Waldon 0 Shelford 10 Match 2: Royston 0 Shelford 30 Match 3: Wendens Ambo 0 – Shelford 20 Match 5: Shelford B 0 – Shelford A 35 As Jamie French said, a game for schizophrenics. A win would give the A’s the cup but the B’s were in no mood to capitulate. Both sides fought out a bitter encounter with the battle lasting for what seemed days. It was a game for rewards with Henry Breeze, springing like a young gazelle from the half way line to outpace and the chasing pack on three occasions to score 3 well deserved tries. The backs as well were represented in the first half with the ever present Tom French also going over for a richly deserved try. With the half time team talk being given by Captain Harry Simpson they were ready to seal their victory. The second half closed out with tries for Joe Thomson form the kick off for his magnificent 7th. Jamie Johnson finally got his reward with a well worked try run over from the half way line and Jamie Coates, also in celebratory mood putting the game beyond the B’s with the final games 7th try. The squad should be well pleased with themselves. The team played fantastically as a whole with the backs and forwards interchanging well and the forwards carrying the fight constantly to the opposition. The second tournament victory of the year for a very special set of lads and the county cup should now be our very real aim. Developing squad reports: Under 8’s – Wendens Festival Winners Shelford 25 Ely 5 Shelford 30 Bury 10 Shelford 40 Wendens Ambo 25 Cup Final Shelford 30 Royston 20 A fantastic effort by all the players saw Shelford go unbeaten to win the Wendens Festival. Although we scored some outstanding tries it was our defence that won the day. With everyone playing their part we made it difficult for teams to score against us. The best performance of the day was against a very talented Wendens Ambo A team who threatened to score every time they touched the ball. But with a never give up approach and some spectacular last ditch diving tags Shelford manage to keep ahead. The players should all be very proud of themselves especially as we received some great feedback on their discipline and attitude towards the game and its officials.Under 7's - Wendens Ambo Festival Pool A Shelford A 25 Bury St Edmunds 35 Shelford A 15 Wendens Ambo B 10 Shelford A 15 Royston 15 Pool B Shelford B 20 Ely 30 Shelford B 25 Saffron Walden A 35 Shelford B 10 Wendens Ambo A 25 Report: Shelford ‘A’ started slowly in what turned out to be their toughest game against the eventual tournament winners. Bury St Edmunds took an early lead and although Shelford were never more than two tries behind they were unable to overhaul Bury St Edmunds and the final score was 25-35. The try scorers for Shelford were Ollie French (2), Joe Davies, Harry Punshon and Joshua Speechley. In their second pool match Shelford ‘A’ met Wendens Ambo ‘B’ and put in a much better performance coming out 15-10 winners. The try scorers were Joshua Speechley (2) and Harry Punshon. In their final pool game Shelford ‘A’ met Royston in a very close game and eventually they couldn’t be separated with a 15-15 draw. This time the try scorers were Harry Punshon and William Barnett (2). With one win, one tie and one loss, Shelford ‘A’ came second in their pool and unfortunately failed to progress to the final. It was always going to be a tough day for the Shelford ‘B’ team but they played well and there were a number of outstanding individual performances. In their first pool game Shelford ‘B’ met the eventual tournament runners-up but three tries from Toby Owers and one from George Shannon kept Shelford ‘B’ close in a 20-30 defeat. In their second pool game Shelford ‘B’ met a strong Saffron Walden ‘A’ and were on the wrong side of a 35-10 score line. Despite the defeat, it was pleasing to see the Shelford team keep their heads up and keep trying to the end. Shelford’s two tries came from Joshua Barrett and George Shannon. In their final pool game Shelford again put in a committed performance against a stronger Wendens Ambo ‘A’ side, losing 10-25. The Shelford tries came from Toby Owers and William Gelling. For his all round efforts, some elusive running and some determined chasing, William Barnett received the ‘player of the day’ award for the ‘A’ team. It was a tough day for the ‘B’ team so the ‘player of the day’ award for the ‘B’ team went to Toby Owers who scored four tries against some strong opposition.
