ImageWithin the first ten minutes of their away fixture against Worthing, Shelford had given themselves a mountain to climb, as they allowed their hosts to score three early tries, all of which were converted. With the margin of victory at the end of the game standing at 24 points, this proved to be the decisive period of the match.

Worthing began their strong start by smuggling possession away from Shelford and moving the ball wide to flanker Jamie Redmayne who ran in unopposed for their Worthing's first try, converted by full back Matt Mclean. Their second try involved a little fortune however, after a speculative kick from Mclean came to rest in the Shelford scoring zone and outside centre Greg Sullivan was on hand to touch down, with Mclean adding the extras. After a series of powerful assaults on the Shelford line, rampaging number 8, Samisi Tuilava crashed over for his first try of the game after poor defending from Shelford on the blind side. Mclean knocked the conversion over to extend Worthing's lead to 21 points and bring to an end a torrid opening period for the visitors.

Shelford would have been forgiven for being in shell-shock at this stage, but they responded positively and Ed Gough was able to put Shelford’s first points on the board after a Worthing infringement. Shelford continued to reduce the arrears as Sam Hoad darted in at the right corner after a clever break down the blind side from fly half, Tom Dann. With the tide turning in their favour, Shelford claimed the next score too, as Gough added a further 3 penalty points to the Shelford total. However, Tuilava brutally wrested momentum from the visitors as he bulldozed his way over the line from an attacking scrum, making the score 26 – 11 at the interval.

With the elements in their favour, Shelford continued to reduce the deficit in the second half, as Gough bisected the posts from a penalty kick. However, Worthing's reply was swift and they created another overlap at ease and fly half Ben Dudley took the final pass to score their fifth try which Mclean converted. After a relatively quiet final quarter, replacement scrum half Mike Marsh raced down the right flank to score their 6th try and complete a convincing victory, which saw Worthing leapfrog Shelford in the league table.
