Shelford Ladies 0 Cambridge Select 57 – 24th Jan 2010

After a six week break from rugby Shelford took on Cambridge Select at Fitzwilliam pitches. Following the home fixture Shelford had worked hard on their rucking, but unfortunately Cambridge Select had begun their varsity build up and it showed. Most of the first half was played in Shelford’s 22. Shelford stuck to their task well, with some awesome tackling, but Cambridge Select were just too strong. At the break the score was 32-0 to Cambridge Select.

Shelford began the second half strongly, managing to keep their opposition away from their try line for some time. The Cambridge fly half was pressured into kicking a lot of ball away. The Cambridge Select team chasing was good but Shelford's back three did well to hold on to the ball until support arrived. Shelford showed great commitment in attack and started to work their way up the pitch but Cambridge Select capitalised well on Shelford's handling errors and scored several more tries.

Shelford were able to prove their superiority in the post match activities however, upholding their good name when it came to pint downing. Players of the match were Charlie Falkingham (9) for her superb work in disrupting Cambridge's 9-10 channel, and Jen Worth (2) who bravely stepped in at the last minute and made her hooking and front row debut.
Being a local derby there were great expectations for a true battle. This game truly lived up to it with a real spectacle proving both sides from Cambridge can play great rugby.
