Shelford Development Squad 31 - 8 London Scottish Development

The previous week saw the development squad travel to Blackheath to play their 2nd XV on artificial, in game which they narrowly lost despite creating a good number of chances and dominating for large periods of the game. Back on the stickier wicket at Shelford we would need to be on top form and take all our chances to get a result against a London Scottish side which had defeated us earlier in the season.

With a very strong side taking the field we were looking to dominate the early exchanges and started strongly creating a number of chances in wide areas, unfortunately none of these opportunities were converted as we looked to do a little too much with the ball as individuals. A lack of ability to hold onto the ball in contact was also frustrating us as we coughed up possession a couple of times in threatening positions.

The first score went to Scottish following some driving work through their forwards. We struck back with some strong running from Rupert Ransom taking an inside ball and crossing under the posts. With the score 7-5 at half time we were dissapointed with the first half performance but knew we had more in the tank for the second half.

We started to exert our authority in the second half mainly through some strong running and some abrasive forward play with Tony Begovic having a strong influence at the breakdown. Tim Mann got the ball rolling with a score in the corner handing off the cover defence strongly. John Naylor finished off a second strong run from Tim to add another score and suddenly there was daylight between the two sides. Scottish were not done yet though as they continued to exert pressure on our line, the defence held strong though and managed to conceded just one penalty in the second half. Tom Docherty looked lively coming off the bench and darted over from a quick tap for a score, before Anver Alexander in typical bullish fashion barged over for the final score.

It was a solid performance but we know we will have to be back on top form next week at Henley if we are to trouble the league leaders. Second place in the league is still definitely on the cards and with Henley losing to Chinnor on Saturday wins home and away against the top side will see us with a chance to take the title. All still to play for.....
