Worthing 2nd XV 30 - 33 Shelford Development Squad

Shelford started brightly at Worthing defending strongly and turning defence into attack. A try saving text book cover tackle from Tim 'Chalkie' White saw the ball turned over and Chris Yeomans started the break out deep in our own 22, drawing the defence and putting away Sam Redmayne who showed great pace to beat the cover defence and go in under the posts.

Regularly turning over ball and counter attacking effectively was a feature of all of Shelfords first half scores. Charlie Baker bagging a brace of try's showing good pace and awareness and Gaz Mclaughlin demonstrated his footballing skills dribbling the ball over the line for a score leaving the half time score 26-10 to Shelford. There was controversy in the first half as the referee awarded a try to Worthing that was scored by John Naylor. Sam was denied a second score when he crossed the line after a great team move but was adjudged not to have grounded the ball on any of the 4 occasions he and we felt he did.

The second half was a scrappy affair and we allowed Worthing to dominate talking our foot off the gas and not being dynamic enough at, or quick enough to, the ruck. Rupert Ransom continued to rampage around the park though in a man-of-the match performance. We did manage to get on the score sheet in the second half after a quick tap Penalty found it's way to Anver Alexander who showed good pace and strength to finish from medium range, compared to his long range effort at Chinnor! The conversion went over but the referee did not record it and with Worthing scoring with no time left by his scoring if they got the conversion we would have lost. Fortunately we were rescued by the upright and came away with a much needed win.

With a big build up to the Barnes game next weekend another victory could see us 3rd in the league at Christmas which would be a strong position going into the New Year. Don't forget your Young Persons Railcard and Christmas Jumpers!!!
