Shelford 5th XV 3 - Cottenham Renegades 63 Picture the scene, a bored millionaire is assembling a team of rugby players to represent a Cambridge suburb. He calls up the lads individually not letting them see who is hiring them. The day of the 'job' arrives and the men arrive from different directions. They have never met before and are not aware of each other. The first time they assemble is actually on the pitch. The team has a number of players who have not caressed the leather is a long time, enthusiastic but nervous. The team of strangers begin well and even take the lead.
It was short lived but a first for the 5ths and lifted the opposition to lift their game and the game swung back towards them. However despite the clear advantage of fitness and teamwork Shelford kept their heads up and came back again and again to play on occasions a great game. The scoreline does not represent the effort that was made by this team of gifted misfits. I'm sure there'll be a few sore muscles struggling round the Grand Arcade on Sunday but also a lot of satisfied heads. Christmas is a period for giving and this team gave their all and only got a rather delicious stew in return but I hope I can look forward to next year and lots more rugby and lots more of this kind of effort. Special mention to Charlie, Michael and Simon for coming out of retirement and look forward to many more occasions. To Julian, Peter, Kevin and Russ for playing despite injuries and for everybody else for giving everything. Good luck lads and see you next time. Written by Richard Craddock |
