Chinnor 2nd XV 12 - 50 Shelford Development Squad

Shelford Development Squad travelled to Chinnor with a strong squad for what is the first of four crucial league games prior to Christmas, knowing four wins will start the march up the table which, with two games in hand, should put us in a strong position for a proper assault on the top 3 places in the new year.

As always the quality of performance is as important as the result for the development sqauad and both were in evidence on Saturday as we took our chances well and played some expansive and entertaining 15 man rugby. We will need to ensure the set piece is more solid and the big Chinnor pack exerted their dominance for periods of the game which will have to deal with better in future.

The first score was a result of a great bit of vision from Sam Meyland on the wing who caught a poor clearance and chipped the defence to find no-one at home dtting down unopposed. Chinnor responded through their pack and some strong driving play saw them get a try back. However despite a number of further strong drives the Shelford defence held up firmly and the rest of first half scoring belonged to Shelford. Rupert Ransom scored his third try in his second game for the team after a typically barnstorming run from broken play. Charlie Baker, who had a standout game at 9, scored the first of two tries showing pace and strength to cross the line following a quick tap penalty. The final score of the half came from Tim Mann who was also having a strong game in both attack and defence.

The second half started shakily but we were soon back on track showing a willingness to spin the ball wide and run from anywhere and were unlucky not to score sooner following a good break from Adam Hodgkisson. Tim Mann broke and beat a number of defenders before drawing the full back and putting Andy Daly away for the score. Chinnor replied with another score through their strong forward pack following a 5m scrum. A second 5m scrum was reposted and from then on Shelford broke away with a second try for Tim Mann and a first for Anver Alexander who showed great pace to run a full 60m for the score. Charlie Baker scored his second with another display of great footwork and pace to beat a number of would be tacklers to complete the scoring. Chris Yeomans produced one of the moments of the match when he took the ball at full back and looked to be toasted by two huge Chinnor forwards, using his diminutive stature to great effect Yeomans ducked under both defenders and emerged from the tackle unscathed to continue his run to great effect.

It was a good performance and one we will hope to build on next week when we take on Westcombe Park at Davey Field.
