After an impressive first half display, three converted tries in the first 15 minutes of the second half killed off their opponents and sealed a 5-point victory for Shelford for the second time this season. Shelford started brightly and after an incisive break from full back Chris Glynn, the industrious Mark Erven was on hand to take the try scoring pass and touch down under the posts, which Ed Gough converted. Shelford's forwards continued to impose themselves on their opposition and a series of powerful forward drives allowed Scott Jackowski to score Shelford's second converted try. Facing a disorganized Richmond defence, the outstanding Toby Berridge embarked on a 50-meter run, beating several tacklers before touching down for Shelford's third converted try. After both sides traded yellow cards for persistent offences, Richmond second row Wesley Tristan saw red for illegal use of the head. However, even with a one-man deficit, Richmond attacked with purpose, allowing left winger Johnny Wehber to dart in at the corner. Shelford took a 21 – 5 lead into the interval. Shelford began the second half ruthlessly, starving their opposition of any quality ball and executing their attacks superbly to score three tries within 15 minutes of the restart. A quick tap penalty from Alex Birkby, saw the Shelford captain hauled down 2 meters short of the line. However, Gough was on hand to leap over for a try which he converted. Birkby added another try minutes later when he was in support after Berridge had made another slashing break through the heart of the Richmond defence. The metronomic Gough added the extras. Warwick Andersen sealed the win with two well-taken tries, showing considerable strength to dispose of several would-be tacklers. Richmond scored two late consolation tries through Tim Cook and captain Henry Head, but it proved to be too little too late, as Shelford grabbed the spoils with a victory that allowed them to leapfrog their opponents to take 7th position in the league. |
