An unacceptably high number of penalties conceded by Shelford in the second half at Rosslyn Park prevented them from returning to the Davey Field with their third away victory of the season. Playing in driving rain and gusting wind, Shelford started strongly and played the majority of the half in Rosslyn Park territory. Weather and ground conditions dictated that play would primarily be through the forwards, as expansive, flowing rugby was impossible. The Shelford pack put together a series of powerful, narrow drives, which resulted in the hosts conceding two early penalties, which Gough converted. It was then Rosslyn Park's turn to attack the Shelford line and persistent forward drives resulted in Nick Huggett driving over for the first try of the game. Shelford extended their lead after the Shelford pack manipulated an attacking scrum in their favour, allowing Shelford battering ram, Lea, to strike at the heart of the Rosslyn Park midfield. Breaking through tackles, Lea offloaded to Ed Mills, who raced clear to touch down. The half time score of 11 - 5 reflected Shelford's dominance and an upset looked possible. With the elements in their favour in the second half, Rosslyn Park played for territory and also had the majority of possession. Despite Shelford's defence remaining solid throughout the second period, they gave away too many careless penalties, providing Rosslyn Park marksman, Ross Laidlaw, several penalty kicks to reduce the arrears. Three successful penalties gave the home side a 14 - 11 victory and their jubilant celebration at final whistle indicated that they knew they had played their "get out of jail free" card. |
