Shelford Ladies 10 Cambridge Select 20

To put it bluntly this was an awesome show of rugby from two massively dedicated teams, who produced some of the most impressive ladies rugby played at Shelford Rugby Club. The main difference in this game was the great counter rucking from Cambridge Select and great endeavour around the park. Not to take away from Shelford who themselves rucked like demons and ran strong and hard at the opposition defence.

First blood went to Shelford with a Kath Stokes try after a ‘bump and pass’ from Lizell Heather. There was a quick response from Cambridge Select who produced a good backs converted try following a scrum inside Shelford’s twenty-two. A period of close fought plays followed with both teams tackling well. Cambridge Select broke the Shelford defensive line close to half time with another great run from the backs. The half time score was 14-5 to Cambridge Select.

The second half kicked off with more aggression and intensity from Shelford. It was Shelford who can take heart from scoring the only try of the second half. Only two penalties from Cambridge Select kicked with perfection from full back Kate Robson. But the last and best ‘hurrah’ came from the home side who, in the dying minutes with the game gone, fought to score a well worked set of phase plays, going the same way and suffocated the defence, to allow Kath Stokes to crash over in the corner.Being a local derby there were great expectations for a true battle. This game truly lived up to it with a real spectacle proving both sides from Cambridge can play great rugby.
