Richmond Saxons 36 - 40 Shelford Development Squad

Shelford Development squad braved the London Underground and Twickenham traffic to travel to Richmond on Saturday with a depleted squad after a late outbreak of 'travel sickness'. 13 players arrived at Royston Train station and a further 4 made it to the Athletic Ground, but there was plenty of quality in the side to ensure the development squad could get their season back on track.

The pitch and conditions were perfect and so was the start as a big up and under was not dealt with effectively by the Richmond winger allowing John Naylor to snaffle up the ball and plunge over for the first score.

James Worthington then scored the first of two tries from a set move from a solid Shelford scrum, taking a long pass and stepping the defence to finish under the posts. 14-0 up and a great start. We then allowed Richmond back into the game as a result of some weak tackling leaking a try and indiscipline, the Richmond 10 always keeping them within touching distance with 3 pointers.

Chris Yeoman, playing out of position at 7, was influential both in attack and defence and capped another barnstorming run by barging over the line after handing off a number of would be tacklers - most of whom seemed intent on decapitating him.

Charlie Baker also having a good game showed great pace to capitalise on the quick thinking of Chris Yeoman’s taking a quick line out to Rory Finlayson who put Charlie away for the score in the corner.

The second half followed very much the pattern of the first with Shelford playing a wide game and Richmond recycling quickly through their forwards. The Richmond 10 continued to keep them in touch with a number of penalties. James Worthington scored the second of his tries from another well worked planned move from a scrum this time linking with Tom Docherty to go over for the score.

Two classic moments in the second half stood out, the first was Rory getting another yellow card with the reason given from the ref being a simple summation of every other refs feelings "I have just had enough of you". The second followed slow recycled ball, Chris Yeoman called for cross-field kick and Andy duly obliged nailing it between the posts and onto the adjacent pitch. The ref then awarded a drop goal to roars of protest from the Richmond team - when quizzed by the ref as to the nature of the kick Andy's poker face cracked and the 'drop goal' was correctly struck from the score board.

With 10 minutes to go Richmond got their noses in front for the first time, going 3 points up following an extended period of pressure as a result of Shelford going into their shells a bit and being content to clear their lines rather than continue to play the expansive game that had been so effective thus far. With the score 33 -36 Gaz piped up and Shelford got back to basics, after 3 phases of possession a miss pass to James Worthington allowed him to repay the favour to Tom Docherty putting him over in the corner to put us in front again. At 38-36, with a minute on the clock and with the Richmond 10 slotting everything the conversion would prove to be important as it sailed over from the touchline. Richmond kicked off to the open side and Shelford recycled effectively looking to put the ball out for the final whistle, however a moment of madness earned Richmond a Penalty and Shelford a yellow card. With 4 points needed Richmond went for the corner and the push over. Shelford dug deep held out and forced a knock on - final whistle.

A great result and a good performance which we can no doubt build on to get back up the league table. The commitment and effort of all those who travelled to London can not be faulted and hopefully all those who made the journey will be available for the next game against Bournemouth at home on Saturday - onwards and upwards.
