It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. This report is dedicated to all those who weren't there. To you I salute you. The good thing about 5th team rugby is the ability to adapt to varying circumstances. You wake up on Wednesday morning thinking you're playing a bunch of old rough Roystonians and having a good chance of producing a quality side. Then by a mixture of cunning , illness , failure and an unlimited mobile phone tariff, we end up travelling to Hitchin with 13 lads and only a couple of regular front 5 players !!
Luckily, we bumped into Tom in a car park in Royston - we won't ask what he was doing there!! An interesting selection meeting later and we had a 'team' of volunteers who were going to give their all. The weather was perfect for open, inventive rugby and that's all we could do. We were up against a big lumbering pack and with unopposed scrum it made for a interesting game plan. We took our chances, pressured them when they had the ball and eventually it paid off. We scored THREE TRIES!! Jordan ,the Jason Robinson of the Mighty Fifths ran straight and true and came away with a brace and at times we gave as good as we got. I would to like thank Stuart for the passes he gave out and we hoping Crispy will make a speedy recovery - modern medicine is wonderful. Also I have to apologise for listening to the 'grumpy' ref for kick placement advice and then being sidestepped by my own grandfather! Debutants Charles and Graham ran well and will provide good material for the future of the team. I can honestly say that everybody gave 100% and we could have scored a couple more tries with a bit more luck and if we ate our greens! Thank you gentlemen, by the look on their faces Hitchin 3's will not be sleeping peacefully in their beds tonight. Next week we go on and play again and give another team a game of rugby.
