Shelford 5th XV 0 Cambridge 'Exiles' 60 I can still remember the voices in my head calling out - Broad Sword calling Danny Boy , Broad Sword calling Danny Boy. Come in Danny Boy.
That's when I woke up and it was Saturday morning and I realised that we had another game to look forward to and the prospect of a physical contest. Team selection began with the regulars and ended a bit like the scene in Bridge over the River Kwai when Alec Guinness goes into the hospital and makes the walking wounded work on the bridge...and look what they did to his bridge. I could go into the details of the game but that would unnecessary. All you have to know is that we played our best, gave everything for each other and came off the pitch bruised, sore , looking for painkillers but proud . We have improved each week and despite being a scratch team with players who had not played rugby before we gave a very experienced Cambridge side that were bigger and uglier, a tricky game of rugby. Again I say hold your heads up lads and it will come. We will improve and we will win games. We are the mighty fifths and we are here to play rugby. That's all we do.
