Match Report 5ths XV 0 Cambourne 103

In the summer of 1940 a group of young men faced a massive force across the English channel - those few , those brave few stood up and were counted and this afternoon a few brave men stood up to the might of Cambourne and had the time of their lives. We were reduced by a few late 'withdrawals'  and only 12 modern rugby disciples travelled. As we stood on the pitch watching them go through their pre match routines I was reminded of the scene in 'The Great Escape' where Herr Bartlett stood on a deserted hill with his comrades and were mowed down in cold blood.

We had to dig deep and come up with a miracle - obviously we didn't win, but the score does not reflect the effect and gamemanship we showed and all the players can hold their heads high knowing I was proud to lead you off that pitch. No one let the team down, players who had not played since school gave their all. We had a lot of tackling practice and we now know how to bring down a herd of wilderbeest if we need to. We kept our heads up and held our form throughout. Particular mention should go to the forwards who, despite the obvious disadvantages, played out of their skins. Thank you gentlemen for a great afternoon - the team's motto rings true - 'better than shopping'. See you next week - I can't wait.
