ImageSwanage & Wareham 14 - 34 Shelford

The Shelford 1st XV have done a lot of travelling recently and on Saturday, following our trip to Jersey, we travelled to Dorset to play against Swanage & Wareham in the first round of the EDF Energy National Trophy. With the exception of Kramer Ronaki and Phil Bullen-Brown, we were at full strength and when the referee's final whistle blew, we had done just enough to advance through to the second round stage.

It was a lively start by the Shelford collective and within 2 minutes of the referees first whistle, Prince Harry had dotted the ball down in truly regal fashion in the right corner. We did not capitalise on this fine start however, as instead of continuing to add to our tally, we allowed the hosts a foothold in the game and, buoyed by a vociferous home support, they needed no second invitation. We conceded a cheap score down the right flank, when defensive confusion presented a clear run in for their full back. In another embarrassing scenario, were pushed towards our own try line from a 5 meter scrum. The referee awarded a penalty try for illegally kicking the ball from the feet of the S&W number 8.

When it looked as though an upset could be on the cards, we began to put together more structured and controlled attacks, which yielded tries for Dom Jones and James Armitage.

The second half was a much better display from the Shelford Boys, although we still did not hit top form. Further tries came form Scott Jackowski (2) and Dom Jones also crossed for his second, to transform the scoreline into something more respectable - Swanage & Wareham 14 - 34 Shelford.

Next week, we will have to address some of our defensive issues and be more professional in our approach. However, as they say, a win is a win and we are still undefeated in both league and cup so far this season. After 6 games, this is quite respectable. We look forward to seeing you all at the Davey Field on Saturday, as we play hosts to Sutton&Epsom in what will be a most welcome home fixture for the Shelford collective!
