ImageShelford 59 - 19 Portsmouth

Tries: Gough 2, Davies 2, Jones, Birkby, Bergovich, Bullen-Brown, Ronaki
Conversions: Gough 4
Penalties: Gough 2

Saturday saw the Shelford Boys entertain the home crowd for the first time this season. The sun was shining, the wind negligible, the footing firm and Shelford's attacking rugby was easily as impressive as the conditions.

After what was a slow start, where we conceded the first score of the game through defensive indecision and a general lack of communication, Shelford began to dominate our opposition through a combination of well-structured attacks, quick thinking and good decision making. From a series of phases up the left flank, young Ed "Prince Harry" Gough sliced through the visitor's defence with a vicious side step that totally flummoxed the Portsmouth inside back division. A quick tap penalty resulted in Phil Bullen-Brown being released down the right flank to scorch in at the corner for Shelford's second score. Shelford's third score came from home debutant, Tony "CB2" Bergovich who supported Aki Lea on one of his typical rampaging runs and took a neat offload before bulldozing over the line. Half time score Shelford 19, Portsmouth 7.

Shelford started the second half in the same way that we finished the first. More enterprising play saw the home team add another 6 tries to our first half accumulation. Two quickly-taken line outs saw first Dom "Ging Gong" Jones and then home favourite Kramer Ronaki cross for the home team. Rich Davies (twice), myself and our regal lookalike, Goughie, also crossed for the home team. Goughie's second score was gifted to him by one of the opposition props, who lifted the ball charitably into Goughie's stomach for an interception try. Realising that he had an unchallenged run to the line, Goughie began to celebrate before the try had been scored. The home crowd reacted with a vibrant cheer, a response indicating that they were thoroughly entertained by Goughie's showbiz antics. Good job he didn't drop the ball!!!

Overall, this was a very pleasing performance for the Shelford collective. The recent law changes have encouraged more enterprising and free-flowing rugby at all levels of the game. We have embraced and reacted very positively to these changes and this has been reflected in our first two results. We have a very strong attacking squad and are capable of scoring tries throughout the team and from all areas of the pitch. Improvements need to made however, in our defensive patterns, general discipline and communication. If we can put right the wrongs of the first two games and continue to build on our attacking dynamism, we will be a very difficult team to beat this year. It is too early to say who are the favourites in London One. However, if we pull together, continue to play for one another and learn quickly from our mistakes, it is hard to believe that we won't be challenging for promotion at the business end of the season.

We hope that you will continue to support us throughout this promising campaign.
