ImageSaturday's game against Haywards Heath was a must-win fixture for the Shelford collective. Billing ourselves as title contenders, we had to claim victory against one of the league's "new boys" in order to validate this assertion. With a satisfactory all-round display, we didn't disappoint and now have our first 2 points on the board.

Preparations had gone well, spirits were high and everyone wanted to test themselves and determine whether they had progressed or regressed since the end of the 2007/2008 season. The response was emphatic, as the Shelford players, to a man, performed superbly and put together a fine display that included 4 very well-taken tries.

The first came from turn over ball just inside the Haywards half. Fast hands saw Dom "Ging Gong" Jones in a 2 on 1 situation with the Haywards fullback who failed to commit himself to the tackle. This allowed the Shelford flyer to race through to the line for the first try of the season. The second try came from the great lump of Yorkshire granite known only to his mates as "Armo". From a breakdown inside the Haywards 22, Armo made himself available for a crash ball and proceeded to smash aside 3 would-be tacklers and thrust himself over the line for Shelford's second try.

After the Hayward's captain was sin binned , Shelford made their extra man count by scoring a further two tries. The third try was a result of a poorly defended blind side, allowing yours truly to cross the whitewash. The fourth was a well-worked move that saw the ball in the hands of young Ed Gough (Prince Harry lookalike!) who turned the last defender inside out before diving in at the corner. Prince Harry added a conversion and two penalties to make the final score 28 - 13 in our favour.

This was a very good start to the season for us. We were strong in defence, confident and incisive in attack. Close-season signings performed very well and fitted in seamlessly with last year's faithful. An administrative error, whereby a postcode was omitted from Tony Bergovich's registration form, meant that he could not play in Saturday's game. However, along with Aki Lea, he will be available for next week's fixture against Portsmouth and will produce a selection head ache for Coach Tovo. A nice problem to have! Incidentally, Tony's new nickname at the club is "CB2"!

We look forward to your continued support throughout the season and hope to produce some enterprising rugby and many more victories along the way.
