Development Squad vs. Saffron Walden 1st XV Saturday 6th September 2008 KO 2.30pm Having had excellent numbers at a long and gruelling pre-season training programme it is great to be able to get into the real business of regular Saturday rugby. With an internal trial match and a warm-up game against West Suffolk College under our belts the squad is looking very strong heading into Saturdays fixture against Saffron Walden first team. There is genuine competition for places in the development squad this year and it is good to see a number of the colts stepping up and looking to gain experience during what I am sure will prove to be a long and competitive league campaign. Our aim for the season is simple, to equal last years feat of three competitions entered and three trophies won. This is eminently possible with the squad that have been training so far, providing the level of commitment that has been evident to date continues throughout the season. I am sure there will be some players who will be disappointed by being left out of the squad initially but they must then rise to the challenge of regaining their place in the team. The Warm up game against West Suffolk College which the development team won 24-20, despite being 12 -20 down with 20 minutes left on the clock, showed that the belief and determination to win is there in the squad, this must now be carried through into the league season. Saffron Walden, who play in London 3 will be a good test for the Development team who will be competing at this level in the Canterbury Division League 3. We must make sure the structure and organisation are improved for Saturday and will work hard on this Tuesday and Thursday with everyone at Training. It was really positive for the team to be so well supported at the end of last season when the league win was secured and I hope this will continue this season with people coming down to watch particularly when we are playing at home. Kick off on Saturday is 2:30 at Home and we look forward to seeing as many as possible there. |
