ImageShelford 17 Haywards Heath 15

This was always going to be a tight game with all that was at stake and credit to both teams to making a very enjoyable game to watch and one that went right to the end to determine who was victorious.

Haywards Heath were a very good side and had the chance to win with a penalty kick at the end and although very glad that the kick did not go over the final result with Shelford winning reflected the game as a whole. It was a great team effort with our defence the highlight and when given chances in attack they were taken which was the difference between the sides on the day. We scored just once in the first half, from penalties we kicked to the corner and with our lineout working well drove to the line and although held up Briggsy picked up and went over. A lapse in defence though nearer the end of the half saw them score in the corner leaving the half time score five apiece. We have tended to be stronger this season going up the slope and although it was windy there was no real advantage so we knew we had a chance to take this game. Haywards Heath wasted some good chances to possibly score in the second half but a bit of white line fever rather than using the overlaps helped us but when we had chances to break and create try scoring opportunities we did and a converted try from Clem and good hands from him to allow Will to score in the corner put us 17 – 8 to the good. Then it was time to buckle down and defend which we did admirably until with four minutes to go they scored and converted to make it 17 – 15. The longest four minutes then ensued and wave after wave of attack was defended well as they went from side to side without gaining the break through they wanted until the ref’s arm went up for advantage and as they could not get through he went back for the penalty. Then came the silence as all waited for the kick which thankfully never made it and the win which was so desperately desired had happened. This was not the league won for us though as we still have to play Tring next weekend but as it has been for weeks up to now it is still in our hands.
