Before the match began, we identified that Shelford’s forward platform would be the key to success. The forwards delivered an outstanding combination of strength, power and pace and showed a brutally uncompromising mentality to render our opposition little more than cannon fodder. This platform provided perfect ball for the backs who attacked with guile and at speed, making breaks from all around the park. Tom Dann’s flawless kicking for goal and Chris Glynn’s booming kicks out of hand accentuated our dominance and must have left our hosts feeling dejected and demoralised as they dragged their sodden bodies into the half time break. With the result assured and playing into a stiffening wind, Shelford continued to dominate possession, if not territory. We chanced our arm at every opportunity, running from deep and continuing to entertain our travelling supporters. Naturally this yielded some unforced errors, one of which allowed the hosts to score their only try of the game. However, we responded with a further two of our own to subject Basingstoke to their most punishing home defeat of the season. When the referee blew prematurely for full time, Aki Lea moved so quickly to grab the last of the hot water in the showers that he broke Sam Tovo’s speed record that he set when he heard that chickens were selling for half price at Waitrose! However, Aki Lea beat his own speed record only moments later, as Kramer Ronaki entered the showers and began hosing people down with a hose pipe that was connected to the cold water tap! |
