Hertford 20 Shelford 33

A win is a win and at this stage of the season to some degree is all that counts, our performance could have been better but ultimately the three points is what we were after.

The first half was generally scrappy with neither side really taking control of the game but with a couple of breakaway tries for us through Callum and Charlie and us conceding a couple with the elements against us we were slightly ahead at half time 14 – 13. With the wind second half we needed to keep the game in their half and force them to try and break out but keep the pressure on.

Having done this and after several phases the bounce from Andy’s chip over the defence beat both him and the defender but the poacher Charlie was on hand to score. Within minutes Chalky received the ball well within our half and went on a rampaging run with would be tacklers, probably reaching double figures, lying in his wake. Soon after that we scored our best try of the match with many people involved but Charlie getting onto the end of it for his third of the match.

Having built up a comfortable lead we took the foot of the pedal a bit and allowed them a consolation try at the end. There will be tougher games in the run in but we know we can play much better than that so overall pleased with the three points and onto the next hurdle.
