ImageCivil Service 36 - 56 Shelford

The Civil Service game presented an opportunity to forget about Pappa Noel, blow away the festive cobwebs and return to the business of winning rugby games.
We achieved the latter, winning the game 56 points to 36, but I suspect that a few cobwebs still need to be blown away before we play our next game against Old Albanians on Jan 19th.

We had a very impressive start to the game and scored two tries before Civil had a chance to get a foothold in the game. The line out worked superbly and the hosts never really got to grips with an effective way of defending it. We had the wind at our backs and Tom Dann and Rich Davies peppered Civil's right corner time and again. Consequently, the driven line out became our most potent attacking weapon and one that we chose to use throughout the first half.

However, a rash decision in our own 22 and a poor reaction to a Civil kick gifted the home side with two easy tries. We cannot afford to have these kinds of lapses against the top teams.

At half time, with a scoreline of 44 - 12 to Shelford, the result looked to have been decided. Shelford were forced to make a couple of substitutions through injuries and never really established a pattern of play in the second half. Civil exploited some frailties in our defence and scored some impressive tries of their own. A couple of moments of opportunism helped keep Shelford in the ascendency. Charlie Worthington raced through on a loose ball, which allowed Dafydd Lewis to score on his debut and Aki Lea scooped up another loose ball, burst through the Civil defence and offloaded to Scott Jackowski who scored in the corner.

Aki Lea was a stand out player for Shelford and ended the game with 3 tries, although credit should also be given to the forward pack, who dominated the Civil pack, certainly in the first half, to put Shelford in such a commanding position.

On balance this was a satisfactory display. Getting a win under our belts was the primary objective. Now we need to work on our fitness in order to give Old Albanians a thumping when they visit the Davey Field in 2 weeks time. As long as we keep winning, the dream of promotion is still alive.
