ImageMixed emotions filled the dressing-room after this performance. A win was our primary objective on Saturday and we certainly achieved that. However, a more convincing performance was required in order for us to feel that we are improving week by week. Some elements of our game are good enough to compete with anyone in the league, however we played with an air of complacency on Saturday that allowed the visitors sufficient opportunities to score a few tries of their own and bring respectability to the scoreline.

The first half started and within the first 10 minutes, we had scored two converted tries and completely dominated our visitors. The top teams would use this as an invitation to demolish their opponents and starve them of any opportunities to get a foothold in the game. We were slightly more forgiving than this and allowed Thanet to piece together some effective plays of their own. Their fly half broke through a poorly organised defence to feed their outside centre, who score in the corner. We responded with another couple of tries before the break to go into half time with a significant lead, that could and should have been greater.

The second half was similar, in that we were presented with chances to really put our visitors to the sword, but lacked the killer instinct and ruthless mindset to execute this effectively. Thanet crossed for two more tries before Dominic Jones and Aki Lea began to find holes in their defence. A couple of few late scores by man-of-the-match Charlie Worthington improved the scoreline for the hosts and brought the match to a conclusion at 53 - 24.

We travel to Portsmouth on Saturday, where we failed to win last year. This is another must-win game for the Shelford collective, as we strive to obtain that killer instinct that will make us one of the best sides in the division.
