Colts Norwich 0 - 34 Shelford Shelford came to terms with the conditions first this Sunday and never looked back. Playing into a strong wind for the first half they kept the ball in hand and ran it at every opportunity to Norwich only to be stopped by some stout defence or poor execution of the final pass. Until the 17th minute when scrum half Richard Hall broke from the base of a scrum to run 30m and score under the posts which Ben Seymour converted. This seemed to lift Shelford who, after the forwards did several pick and drives, got the ball to the backs who managed to get the ball though the hand quickly for Toby Mepham to score. Just before the break, Shelford scored again though the backs. This time quick ball from the lineout and the ball went to the winger Mike Houghton who ran 20m to score in the corner. After the turn around with the wind at their backs Shelford squandered several chances to increase the score till Harry Robbins scored to finish off a fine back row move in Norwich’s 22, once again converted by Ben Seymour. Harry Robbins was on hand again 5mins later to finish off a fine display of support and running rugby showed by the forwards and backs combining and scoring in the corner. With Norwich losing several players through injury with 10mins to go Shelford lent them several players so that the game could go on. This evened it out as a contest but Shelford scored one more time before the final whistle. This time winger David Cassettari scoring after a good chip and chase. Eastern Counties Cup Under 17’s Norwich 0 Shelford 52 Shelford dispatched a weak Norwich side in ruthless fashion wrapping up the game before half time (Eastern Counties Cup rules end the game when 50 points are reached).Shelford were totally dominant in all aspects of play and scored tries through George Perryx2, Tarren Runham, Michael Keady,Chris Haigh, Theo Norris x2 and Tim Wintle. Tom Ward added 5x conversions.Under 16's Shelford 61 Ely 3 Shelford's backs were rampant in a game that showed what they can do when the pack win secure go forward ball and then release it out wide - the offloading out of the tackle and interplay between forwards and backs was excellent. Of the 11 tries, 8 were scored by the backs - two from man of the match Rob Morris on his debut at Number 10 - Rory Stone also scored a brace from outside centre, showing a wonderful side step and great running lines. A wonderfully floated pass from Cameron Fay to Ryan Kenny earned him a well taken try. Pearce Staples jinking through and Alasdair Paterson collecting from Ian Morrison at number 8 took a try apiece. First Dan Reilly after a great burst from Thomas Queripel, then George Newnham and finally, skipper Josh Pateman claimed scores for the pack who were all over the visitors. Jonathan Swain finished off a flowing move that saw Aaron Langley break down the left, the pack recycled and whilst a minor disagreement ensued at the base of the ruck, the ball went through 5 pairs of hands for Swain to finish next to the posts. Ben Wierny converted 3 tries in a strong wind. Under 13’s Ely 5 Shelford 15 Shelford B U13’s produced a brave display against a big Ely side and refused to be overawed. Shelford spent most of the first half defending resolutely and restricted Ely to one try. However, it was Shelford that put Ely on the back foot for most of the second half as they started to spread the ball out wide and expose some frailties in the home team’s tackling around the fringes. Mid way through the half Frank Omandlewis carved his way through to score in the corner. The tide was very much in Shelford’s favour and with Hector Finch leading the way with some shuddering tackles it was no surprise that Shelford scored again through Will Glydon. It was only some poor ball retention and passing that prevented Shelford from extending the lead. Shelford made full use of the squad and Calum Miller made the most of his brief appearance at the end with a third try for Shelford to secure a 15-5 victory. Under 11’s Newmarket 0 Shelford 21 St Ives 7 Shelford 12 Shelford U11’s played two matched this weekend away at St Ives, the squad played well and their skills were complimented on by the opposition coaches. The first match saw the team play against Newmarket again! This fixture is becoming a regular event. The team won the game with a clean sheet 21 – 0. The tries were scored by Conor Sullivan; Connor Hein-Jones and Callum Lees, conversions by Max Burgess-Clerke; Callum Lees and Conor Sullivan. The next match was played against a mixed age team with St Ives fielding two or three U12 players, in fairness they weren’t all used at the same time.Shelford came away with a 12 -7 win. Tries were scored by Connor Hein-Jones and Callum Lees. The latter try being a gift from Shelford new boy Nathan Abbott who having done the hard work and crossed the line, passed it to Callum for him to touch down. The first try was converted by Max Burgess-Clerke.All in all a good days rugby which a number of A squad players benefiting from playing with the established players. Well done to the whole squad.

Ollie Perry played exceptionally well as part of the Shelford forwards. Whilst George Franklin and Joe Akak were both strong and tackled well for Shelford.
Under 9’s Game 1: Shelford Peacocks 25 – 0 Newmarket Shelford try scorers: Tom Whitehead 3, Kieran Hatter 1 & Thomas Gelling 1 Shelford left off where they finished last week beating Newmarket by 5 tries. Another great performance by Tom Whitehead with 3 tries and the other tries coming from Kieran Hatter and Thomas Gelling. Game 2: St Ives 0 – 20 Shelford Peacocks Shelford Try scorers: Tom Whitehead 2, James King 1 & Ben Frisk 1 Shelford second game was a lot closer, Shelford had to defend for long periods in the first half with a outstanding try saving tackle from Tom Whitehead. Shelford were rewarded with the last play of the first half as Tom Whitehead scored after the ball broke free from the rook to finally find the space to score. This was a tense first half as the home supporters became more vocal as St Ives struggled to break through the Shelford defence. At the start of the second half our pressure was rewarded with a good try from James King. Our third try came from Ben Frisk who made a good interception on the half way line to run home and our last try came from Tom Whitehead following more Shelford pressure. These were 2 good team performances made more satisfying as we defended well and did not concede a try. James King won Man of the Match today for an improved performance and a well taken try. |
