ImageOld Albanians 21 – 24 Shelford

Many predicted that this was going to be a tight game, with Shelford’s performances having improved over the last few weeks and Old Albanians having started the season with 4 wins on the bounce.

In a game that went right down to the wire, that’s exactly what it proved to be.

Although the Old Albanians facilities are unrivalled in our division, the layout of the first team pitch always produces a game of two halves, with the wind blowing ferociously from one end to the other. In the first half, Shelford played into the wind and scored the first points of the game through player coach, Sam Tovo, who went over in the corner from close range after a well-executed driven line out. Tom Dann measured the wind to perfection and his conversion attempt sailed over to send Shelford into an early 7-0 lead. The remainder of the first half was very tight and it wasn’t until the last 5 minutes of the half that the next points were scored. A telegraphed chip over the Shelford defence was defended poorly and the OAs left winger collected to score in the corner. OAs converted a further penalty just before half time to go into the break with a slender 8-7 advantage.

Predictably, Shelford had all the play in the second half and entrenched ourselves in our opponent’s half for almost the entire 40 minutes. A try from Shelford outside centre, Dom Jones, converted by Tom Dann and a further penalty from Dann looked to have put us in a commanding position, however a poor defensive play allowed the home side to come back into the game with a try of their own. Another try from yours truly, also converted by Dann, looked to have put us out of sight with 5 minutes left on the clock, but again the same defensive frailty allowed OAs to score the last points of the game.

This was a much needed win for the Shelford collective and we realised some of our attacking potential in this game. Defence around the breakdown continues to be strong and chiropractor Aki Lea was again involved in many of the bone-crunching hits administered by Shelford. We will continue to improve however, as we are guilty of making unnecessary errors at the breakdown and in defence. These areas will be addressed in training in a continued effort to mould us into the tight unit that we know we can be. Civil Service are our opponents next week and another win is our top-level objective.
