Shelford 32 - 34 Hertford
Unfortunately, the most important rugby game of the weekend ended in a disappointing defeat.
This was followed by England losing to South Africa in the final of the Rugby World Cup. Both games could have gone the other way and in Shelford's case, we should have won this game.
Three tries scored by myself, Aki Lea and a penalty try, one of which was converted and 5 penalty goals from Shelford's new number 10, Tom "Diddy" Dan, were not enough to secure Shelford's third home victory of the season. Defensive errors and poor discipline at the end of the game, presented the visitors with ample opportunity to narrowly escape with a victory.
Despite the disappointing end to the game, Shelford played some very good rugby in both the forwards and the backs. Tom Dan organised our attacks well and used his vision and experience to provide a steadying influence at outside half. Until the last play of the game, discipline had been installed in the Shelford performance and there were strong signals that we are starting to play with much more cohesion and understanding than in previous displays.
We will need to tighten our defence, especially out wide, in order to make ourselves a more difficult team to beat. However, the positive aspects of our game bode well for next Saturday, when we travel to Old Albanians in search of our third win of the season. Skips. |
